3D-printed 'bionic skin' could give robots the sense of touch

Engineering researchers have developed a revolutionary process for 3D printing stretchable electronic sensory devices that could give robots the ability to feel their environment. The discovery is also a major step forward in printing electronics on real human skin.

Nose form was shaped by climate

Big, small, broad, narrow, long or short, turned up, pug, hooked, bulbous or prominent, humans inherit their nose shape from their parents, but ultimately, the shape of someone's nose and that of their parents was formed by a long process of adaptation to our local climate, according to an international team of researchers.

Adolescence is thought to be the time when children go off exercise - but a study in The British Journal of Sports Medicine suggests it happens much earlier, around the age of seven.

Sitting is replacing physical activity from the time children start school, the research suggests.

Children should get at least an hour of exercise a day.

'Smart' bacteria remodel their genes to infect our intestines
Researchers have described how infectious bacteria can sense they’re attached to our intestinal cells, and then remodel their expression of specific genes, including those involved in virulence and metabolism, to exploit our cells and colonize our gut.

The word Cerebellum itself is Latin which means Little Brain. This part of the brain plays an important role in the motor controls. Its main functions include Cognitive functions like attention and language. It also regulates fear and pleasure responses. It receives signals from spinal cord and other brain parts. Cerebellum has the shape of the separate structure beneath the Cerebral Hemispheres attached to the brain’s bottom.

FUNCTION

Cerebellum’s basic function is to calibrate the detailed form of the movement. It receives inputs from the brain, spinal cord and sensory receptors and then in turn provides exact timing for the smooth movements of the skeletal muscular system. It is also important for learning motor behaviors.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Some of the medical problems which can cause Cerebellar damage are as follows.

Stroke
Hemorrhage
Tumors
Alcoholism
Chronic Degenerative Conditions like Olivopontocerebellar Atrophy
Cerebellum can also be affected by some form of Migraine headaches.

An Ovarian Cyst is defined as any collection of fluid surrounded by thin wall within o***y, which is larger than about 2 cm. Ovarian Cysts occur in women of all ages and more frequently in females of childbearing age.

Ovarian Cysts are of two types :

Functional Ovarian Cysts : These are part of normal menstrual cycle and can arise from any part playing a role in the cycle. For example Ovarian Follicles are a normal part of the ovaries playing major role in menstrual cycle. However an Follicle larger than 2 cm is termed as an Ovarian Cyst. Other examples are Thecal Cysts and Corpus Luteum Cysts.
Non-Functional Ovarian Cysts : These cysts do not arise from the female menstrual cycle. They can arise due to several other reasons, for example, Ovarian Cysts arising in Polycystic O***y Syndrome.

Cause of Ovarian Cyst

Ovarian Cysts can arise from a number of reasons. Most common reason however is as follows :

As the Ovarian Follicle matures inside the o***y during a normal menstrual cycle, it grows in size. On the day of ovulation it ruptures and releases the egg outside to be carried to the Uterus via Fallopian tubes. However if it fails to rupture it forms a fluid filled structure with a thin wall covering and hence a Follicular Ovarian Cyst is formed.

Other reasons for formation of Ovarian Cysts are :

Corpus Luteum is formed from ruptured follicle. If its size is more than 3 cm it is classified as Ovarian Cyst.
Hormone abnormality may lead to formation of Thecal Cysts and Polycystic O***y Syndrome.
Endometriosis is proliferation of Uterine wall outside Uterus and it may result in formation of Ovarian Cysts.

Signs and Symptoms of Ovarian Cyst

Ovarian Cysts are mostly functional and harmless. Signs and Symptoms associated with the Ovarian Cysts are :

Abdominal Pain
Uterine Bleeding
Rupture of Ovarian Cyst can cause sudden sharp pain on one side of the lower abdomen.
Nausea and Vomiting
Fatigue and Headaches are common
Heaviness, Pressure or Bloating etc in the abdomen
Difficulty in Urination

An acoustic neuroma, also known as a vestibular schwannoma, is a rare benign (non-cancerous) growth that develops on the eighth cranial nerve. This nerve runs from the inner ear to the brain and is responsible for hearing and balance (equilibrium). Although there is no standard or typical pattern of symptom development, hearing loss in one ear (unilateral) is the initial symptom in approximately 90 percent of affected individuals. Additional common findings include ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and dizziness or imbalance. The symptoms of an acoustic neuroma occur from the tumor pressing against the eighth cranial nerve and disrupting its ability to transmit nerve signals to the brain. An acoustic neuroma is not cancerous (malignant); it does not spread to other parts of the body. The reason an acoustic neuroma forms is unknown.

The deficiency of hemoglobin in the blood is termed as anemia. Since red blood cells carry hemoglobin in blood, lack of RBCs is also called anemia. It is a very common and serious condition that decreases the efficiency and proper functioning of body as body is not getting the normal amount of oxygen.

There are different types of anemia depending upon the cause. The major types of anemia include:

Hemolytic anemia.

Iron deficiency anemia.

Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia.

Aplastic anemia.

Anemia may be temporary in such conditions like pregnancy and it may be prolonged in case of malnutrition.

CAUSES OF ANEMIA

The main causes that result in anemia are:

Reduction in number of RBCs

Faulty production of RBCs

Excessive destruction of RBCs. As it occurs in hereditary spherocytosis.

Conditions requiring increased amounts of hemoglobin such as pregnancy. In such conditions, the demands outpace the production of haemoglobin.

Iron deficiency

Deficiency of vitamins like B12

Old age

Hypothyroidism

Chronic disorders, like lupus, diabetes etc.

SYMPTOMS OF ANEMIA

Major signs and symptoms of anemia are listed below.

Fatigue

Heart palpitations

Pale appearance

Tiredness

Malaise
