Them: plantains aren't healthy
Me: enjoying them at breakfast, lunch & dinner πŸ˜„

Let this serve as your reminder that high-carb cultural foods like plantains aren't inherently unhealthy

Yes, even if you're trying to lose weight, lower blood sugar or support gut health

For each of these goals, your portion size matters much more than removing a food packed with nutrition just because it has CARBS

Not to mention, it's quite filling 🀌🏾

Let's talk about blood sugar management WITH Caribbean foods πŸ‘‡πŸΎ

Too often, I hear people say:

"I can't eat _____ because of my blood sugar."

Maybe it's:
πŸ”Έ Ground provisions
πŸ”Έ Peas and beans
πŸ”Έ Corn
πŸ”Έ Fruit
πŸ”Έ Or even vegetables like carrots & pumpkin

Many people have been taught to fear cultural foods that can actually support their health

It's time to challenge the belief that Caribbean foods cause more harm than good

Yes, you can improve your chronic health while enjoying the foods you know and love πŸ’›

Caribbean foods provide:

πŸ”Έ Dietary fiber that helps you feel satisfied, supports digestion & promotes healthier blood sugar & cholesterol levels.

πŸ”Έ Vitamins, minerals & plant compounds that support metabolism, reduce inflammation & contribute to overall wellness.

πŸ”Έ Culture, heritage & connectionβ€”because healthy eating shouldn't require abandoning your roots.

The key isn't eliminating these foods. It's understanding how to build balanced meals that work for your body's needs.

πŸ‘‡πŸΎ Let's talk about it in the comments:

What's one Caribbean food you've been told to avoid because of your blood sugar?

Recap from the Employee Health Fair with for World Health Day 🌱

My goal was simple: to spark conversations around how our Caribbean foods can support health and help lower chronic inflammation 🍍πŸ₯‘πŸ₯¬πŸ‰πŸ₯₯

Through interactive activities and practical nutrition tips, employees left with personalized strategies to support their well-being beyond the health fair experience.

Grateful to the team at for having me as part of this inaugural event πŸ‘πŸΎ

Such a bittersweet day - on one hand, I'm celebrating my own motherhood, but on the other hand, I'm grieving the loss of my mother πŸ’

I'm still learning how to live with this duality πŸ’”

Our love, experiences and lessons guide me DAILY. I couldn't be more grateful for her 🀍

I'm also deeply grateful for all my other mummies, including my mother-in-law πŸ’™

Wishing every MOM a wonderful Happy Mother's Day πŸ’

And if you've been navigating motherhood while grieving your own mother - I see you 🌱 I am you.

Let's dive into something many of us grew up with - bush medicine 🌿

It's We T'ing Wednesday Cultural Fam' πŸ™ŒπŸΎ

A few years ago I wrote an article for Healthline exploring the traditional practice of bush medicine in the Caribbean

I'm talking about:
🌿 Teas
🌿 Tonics
🌿 Coolings
🌿 And ointments to "sap" for pain

These aren't just remedies - they're part of our cultural identity and something that's very much alive today

But, they do need context, safety & intention

You can read the full article with the link in my bio

πŸ‘‰πŸΎ I'd love to hear from you - what's one bush medicine you grew up with?

Today I walked to remember & honour my mother 🀍 πŸ•ŠοΈ 3.23.2023 Anesta O'Kieffe-Charles

🀍 My Auntie Softie & Aunty Rhonda

And all those whose lives were kilkitayed (turned upside down) because of cancer πŸ™πŸΎ

This was the MOST meaningful 5K event to me - thanks to &

But my mummy was a VIBRANT woman πŸ’ƒπŸΎ so my tears turned into dancing in her honour & for my own healing πŸ˜„ - got me out of my shell

took us home on a high note 🀩 - but thanks for recognizing the men in the crowd & spotlighting my amazing husband πŸ™ŒπŸΎ

Pic of St. Clair Medical because that's where mummy had her surgery to remove her tumor πŸ™πŸΎ

To those who are grieving the loss of a loved one due to cancer - I see you. I'm right there with you. One day at a time.

Idk who this is for but: cultural foods aren't inherently unhealthy

Do you SEE the diversity of OUR foods? 🀏🏾🀏🏾

🍲Rich in dietary fiber which supports gut health πŸ’©, blood sugar management & lowering cholesterol

🍲 Rich in vitamins & minerals that boost your immune health, lower heart disease risk & support brain health 🧠

🍲Lean proteins to support your muscle health (& protect your gym gains πŸ’ͺ🏾) & manage cravings

Our 'authentic Caribbean diet and lifestyle' promotes longevity, quality of life and optimal wellness 🌱

Instead of the blanket "cultural foods are unhealthy" statements, consider whether:
✨ Your portions are appropriate
✨ Your cooking methods support your goals
✨ You're playing fiber, complex carbs & lean proteins at your meals

You don't need to eat "foreign foods" to achieve your wellness goals πŸ™ŒπŸΎ
