When we are young health is usually a given. It is automatic, we take it for granted and we expect it will always be there. As we age we realize differently. We have to actively do things to maintain our health. We have to try to catch disorders early. We have to treat the ones we discover. A healthy person wants a thousand things, but a sick person only wants one.

Let us work with you at Louella MD to still the storms of health and disease. 782-0256.

Having three of my closest colleagues develop breast cancer was really surprising to me. Let's remind ourselves how to deal with this disease in breast cancer awareness month: breast cancer is the most common cancer for women in Trinidad and Tobago. Adopting healthy habits—like exercising regularly, avoiding smoking, and limiting alcohol—can significantly lower your risk of developing it.

Finding breast cancer early gives you the best chance to get well. The best way to catch it early is by getting a mammogram, which is a quick X-ray of the breast that can find tiny lumps long before you can feel them. Doctors recommend that women start getting regular mammograms around age 40, or sooner if breast cancer runs in your family.

If you are diagnosed, your doctors will build a special plan just for you. This treatment might include medicine, surgery, or radiation to fight the cancer. You can get this specialized care and support from doctors at public hospitals across the country, including the St. James Medical Complex and the San Fernando General Hospital. ...Dr. Louella

I'm just reminding you all, because I said it before, if you need to cheer up a sad patient... just dance. You think I'm joking? That lady looked so sad because she was in so much pain. Of course I prescribed analgesics for her but nothing made her squeal in delight like when I did my Indian pose and shake up my bumper. She said I made her day. And I felt good. ... Hi. Dr Louella here. I have started exercising again and naturally I want to take you along with me. We already know, but let's remind ourselves, here is a nice summary of what exercise does:

Strengthens the heart: Lowers blood pressure and reduces heart disease risk.

Controls weight: Burns calories and helps maintain a healthy body weight.

Fights disease: Lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes and various cancers.

Boosts mood: Releases endorphins to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.

Sharpens the mind: Improves memory, focus, and long-term brain health.

Enhances sleep: Helps you fall asleep faster and improves sleep quality.

So when we deny ourselves exercise, we are missing out on all this. Start exercising tomorrow! See you, Dr Louella.

Dr. Louella again. We all know about cars. They need servicing or else they won’t last. Well what about these amazing human bodies that have been intricately put together for us? Nah…dem does wok on autopilot! And, I agree, so it seems when you’re young. The body purrrrs like a well oiled machine. Health is a given. But there comes an age, when you have to actively do things to secure your health. When some of those things you did when you were younger start catching up with you. An age when it HURTS! (Ouch!)

Fortunately, those like myself and others, who haven’t reached that hurting stage as yet, we have a chance!!! We have a chance to think about our health and prevent disease. Prevention is always, always better than cure. We need to change our mindset. Our health is our responsibility. And we already know a whole lot of the right things to do. Start with this: WANT to be healthy. Know that it is up to you to MAKE yourself healthy. ASK, if you don’t know. Start thinking of a plan. Next, implement the plan and stick with it. Say it: I want to be healthy and strong. I want to live a long, enjoyable life. I am going to try my best to do this.ā€ I am worth it!!!
Dr. Louella, over and out!

WORLD ALZHEIMER’S AND BRAIN AWARENESS MONTH: Navigating the Fog
Have you ever lived it Watching someone you love look at you… and not trust you?
Arguing about things that never happened?
Or being told something didn’t happen… when you know they did?

Alzheimer’s is not just forgetting names or dates. It is confusion. It is fear. It is mistrust.
And sometimes… it can turn into anger or even violence if not handled with care.

As the caregiver, you carry all of it ... the long days that feel like 36 hours; the broken sleep;
the physical strain of lifting, bathing; constantly watching;
the emotional weight of loving someone who is slowly changing right in front of you.

You grieve them… while they’re still here. And in trying to hold everything together, you slowly disappear from your own life — your friends, your rest, your joy.

šŸ’” The exhaustion is real
šŸ’” The loneliness is deep
šŸ’” The guilt… even heavier

And this is how burnout begins. Not because you’re weak. But because you’ve been strong… for too long… without support.

Because caregivers focus entirely on the patient and consistently neglect their own health, this prolonged stress culminates in burnout. This is a state of total exhaustion which severely weakens the immune system, leaving caregivers highly vulnerable to serious health complications such as depression, anxiety, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

Here’s what can help:
āœ… Build a small support circle — even 1–2 people makes a difference

āœ… Delegate simple tasks (groceries, pickups, check-ins)

āœ… Take daily breaks — even 15 minutes to breathe, walk, or sit in silence

āœ… Join a support group — in Trinidad & Tobago, the Alzheimer’s Association and Dementia Awareness Research Group offer safe spaces to connect and learn.

And when care becomes more complex… especially for bedridden loved ones…
getting help is not giving up — it’s protecting both of you.

At Louella MD, care comes to you.

Dr. Louella here. We had a really successful Health Fair 2026 on Saturday May 16 šŸ™ŒšŸ™ŒšŸ™Œ.Thanks once again to all who made it possible, the family, friends, the staff, service people, partner companies, of course the patrons and especially, me, me, me, me, me!

Whey sah!!! That was real hard work. And it's only because you enjoyed it so much, I would consider doing it again next year. My heart felt warm and fuzzy when I saw men like Caveman come out their hole, get tested and have fun too!

Yes, we did the usual "Sugar, pressure, urine testing, weight and BMI." We had vision screening, vaccination via South-West Regional Health Authority, lectures, plus consultations with some of he staff of Louella MD Limited (dietitian, physiotherapist and family physicians). Dr Dave Alleyne did a talk for World Hypertension Day, May 17. All of this was brought at no cost to you, as part of our community service. And the community did come out! It was like a big family reunion.

I feel like I missed most of the event because I had to be inside the office consulting away. Someone told me it looked like everybody was smiling and happy. They just didn't want to leave. And why should they? We were well organized. (They said so). We were uniformed. We were knowledgeable. We were respectful, warm and friendly. Health care should always be this goooood!!!

Ok, fine. Yuh ketch meh there, lol. It was the giveaways.🤣It was the giveaways that had them smiling. Our MC worked tirelessly giving away water, infant formula, carry bags, perfume. There were drug giveaways from big pharma (Aventa Trinidad and Tobago and Carlisle Laboratories), small pharma (Health Mart Pharmacy in Orangefield Rd), discounted lab prices (SRH Medical Diagnostics Lab in Montrose) and free eye drops and discounts with vision screening from Sight Solutions Optical Centre Ltd (Caroni Savannah Rd, Chaguanas). Meikit Nutrition & Wellness had their Nutrition Coach wokking for she supper giving away prizes in that Spin and Win game.😁

It is only from the photos that I saw the sexy gym people and that they had members of the audience doing push-ups on my floor. What a thing! Our inhouse DJ ensured that a Trini atmosphere was kept throughout.

It was goodness. It was niceness. More than one person told me that it was wonderful.

What can I say? Promises made, promises kept. We gi' dem performance!!! 😁😁😁 You can check out the pics below.

This is me, Dr. Louella, over and out. I need to sleep for a week.🄱
