A little caution keeps the celebration going all night.

Fireworks are part of how we celebrate Independence Day in Trinidad and Tobago, and most nights go off without a hitch. But the risks are real enough to be worth a minute of your time: fireworks smoke can trigger coughing and shortness of breath, aggravate asthma, and decrease lung function, while burns to the face, eyes, fingers, and hands are among the most common celebration-night injuries seen.

A few habits go a long way. Only responsible adults should handle or light fireworks, children should never be allowed to play with them or sparklers, and a bucket of water or garden hose should be within reach the whole time. If a firework fails to go off, leave it alone rather than trying to relight it, and only ignite one at a time before stepping back.
