MAKE MOVEMENT A HABIT- Chemotherapy Edition (Part 5)- Exercise Precautions

There is no doubt, the value of exercise during cancer treatment. Some of the benefits include:
✅ reducing pain and brain fog
✅ boosting mood
✅ improving sleep
✅ reducing treatment related fatigue
✅ regaining strength, endurance and function
✅ improving overall quality of life
✅ managing oedema
preventing
✅ managing diabetes, high blood pressure

Even with these benefits, precautions must be taken especially when experiencing the side effects of cancer and its treatments. It is therefore imperative that you seek the advice not only of your doctor, but your physiotherapist for us to plan an exercise program that is both safe and effective for you.

So here are some things to consider when beginning any exercise program:
🩷 stay away from uneven surfaces esepcially if you are feeling dizzy or unbalanced
💜 unless your fluid intake is restricted, drink lots of water especially if you are exercising outdoors
🩷 stay away from crowded areas as you may be more prone to developing an infection
💜 if you have cancer that has affected your bones, ensure you see your physio to guide you on the use of weights. Some persons may be more prone to fractures and heavy weights will be a no no.
🩷 if you are using a feeding tube or you have a central line, avoid pools, going to the beach as these will make you more prone to infection, also some activities may dislodge your lines, so your physio will guide you as to which exercises or movements to avoid.

🔥 If you are undergoing any form of cancer treatment, you should avoid exercising completely if you have a fever, a recent heart attack, severe pain, nausea, vomiting. If you are unsure, call your doctor and physio and we will guide you.

Listen to your body, start slowly, get guidance from your registered physiotherapist and embrace movement for a better quality of life!
Even with chemotherapy, continue to make movement a habit!
