🎓 Core memory on this day 2023 : The day I officially became a Pain Medicine Specialist 🩺✨

Looking back at these photos, I am reminded of the endless late nights, long commutes, living in a foreign country in rough times, rigorous clinical hours, and non-stop studying that went into completing my Fellowship in Pain Medicine.

When I first set out on this path, specializing in pain medicine was a vision that felt both thrilling and daunting. Navigating complex cases, mastering advanced interventional procedures, and learning how to truly restore quality of life for patients required every ounce of dedication, resilience, and passion.

Graduating wasn’t just about receiving a certificate —it was the moment a lifelong dream became a daily reality.

To my mentors who guided me, the family, friends and colleagues who stood alongside me, and every patient who has trusted me with their care: thank you. Every single milestone along this journey was worth it.

3 main types of pain classified by cause :

1. Nociceptive -caused by tissue injury or inflammation. Usually aching,throbbing,sharp,tender.Examples-fracture,burns,sprain,surgery.Most common type!

2.Neuropathic (‘nerve pain’)-caused by disease or damage to nervous system including nerves, spinal cord, brain.Usually burning, shooting, tingling, following a nerve distribution.Examples-sciatica,shingle pain, stroke pain

3.Nociplastic pain- increase pain sensitivity due to changes in which the brain processes pain. No clear evidence of tissue or nerve damage. Associated with pain everywhere, other symptoms like sleep and memory disturbances.
Examples-fibromyalgia,some migraines

Sometimes more than one type of pain can be experienced at the same time called MIXED PAIN.
Example-Cancer pain-tumor invading bone(nociceptive) and nearby nerves(neuropathic)

It’s important for you and your pain doctor to know which type of pain you’re experiencing since treatment is different for each.

Fibromyalgia is characterized by chronic, musculoskeletal pain and tenderness about the body with associated sleep disturbance, fatigue and brain fog (fibro fog).

It affects 2-10% of the population and is more common in females. It is part of functional pain syndromes -no organic cause for pain despite extensive investigation.

It is a frequently misunderstood pain condition,so let’s debunk some common myths and raise awareness on this fibromyalgia day.

It’s World Hormone Day!

Hormones act like chemical messengers and play a huge role in pain perception.

Think of hormones as the ‘Volume Knob’ of the nervous system-some turn pain down (like ‘feel good hormones’, endorphins and ‘cuddle hormone’,oxytocin ) while others crank it up (think cortisol).
This is why your pain feels worse on days you’re more stressed!

The good news? You can naturally boost your ‘pain fighting’ hormones through movement, restorative sleep and meaningful social connections.

Understanding this connection is an important step in managing your chronic pain effectively.
