We put the Kinugawa TD04 15T through its paces on a stock 1991 Mitsubishi Stealth TT running 93 octane pump gas. The results speak for themselves:

🚨 White smoke after a fresh turbo install? It's probably not the turbo.

We tore down a CT26 60-1 from a Toyota MR2 3S-GTE and found the real cause — oil starvation. The shaft ran dry at 100,000+ RPM, cooked the seal from the inside, and the smoke came after.

Before fitting a replacement, check: ✅ Oil pressure at the turbo feed port ✅ Oil feed line — replace it, don't reuse it ✅ Oil drain line — must flow freely downward ✅ Prime the turbo before first start

Same turbo + same oil system = same failure in minutes.

No abuse. No aggressive tune. No foreign objects.

Just a clogged air filter creating enough vacuum to pull the rotor forward at high RPM — until the blades ground themselves into dust against the housing wall.

Half a liter of oil in the intercooler. Aluminum slurry throughout the charge system. Uniform blade wear across every single blade.

This is what extreme axial displacement looks like. And most people never see it coming.

Check your air filter. Inspect your intake piping. Don't let a $20 filter destroy a $1,000 turbo.

A couple mockups of new & refreshed parts.

For the 19T turbos I went with a dark bronze powder coat on cold side, funk Motorsport heat blanket on hot side, black cerakote downpipe with gold titanium studs.

I matched the red on the rear valve cover to the front. Originally I had a black DIY paint job on the rear.

Pretty much all visible brackets will be either black or metallic silver.

I finished camshaft seals and the big bore lifters yesterday. I’ll start slowly reassembling everything on the engine in the coming weeks.

I still need to finish the transmission and transfer case refresh & new seals. Then I am going to tackle the engine bay. Tons of new parts to install all around.
