Acupuncture Treatment for Post-Resection Intestinal Adhesion and Necrosis
A Remarkable Journey: Reducing TPN from 7 Days to 3 Days a Week!

A patient suffered from severe bowel necrosis and had half of her intestines resected. This left her relying on Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) for 18 hours every single day at home.

Referred by a home care nurse in late September, she initially presented while restricted to a clear liquid diet. Due to hospitalizations and Western medical skepticism toward herbal medicine,
The beginning was challenging—because she was frequently hospitalized and Western medical team was skeptical about Chinese herbal medicine, we focused solely on acupuncture (utilizing two distinct needle techniques per session). And the treatments were only possible once every two weeks.

Clinical Progression:
✨ Mid-October: She transitioned to to a soft food diet; nocturia (nighttime urination)frequency decreased.

✨ Mid-November: For the first time,TPN reduced to 6 days/week. Nocturia reduced to once per night; vitality improved.

✨Late November: Maintained TPN at 6 days/week; occasional return of appetite (hunger sensation).

✨Mid-December: TPN successfully reduced to 5 days/week; complexion significantly improved and hunger sensations returned.

✨ January Follow-up: TPN requirement further reduced to 3 days/week. Appetite and sleep quality continued to enhance.

✨ February Follow-up: TPN reduced to 2 days/week. And the Western medical team shared the best news yet: by her next visit, she may no longer need TPN at all!

Seeing her regain her freedom and quality of life is the greatest reward. Recovery is a symphony of many parts: Western medical monitoring, the unwavering support of her family, her own strong will, and the supportive role of acupuncture.

I am so grateful for her trust, allowing us to witness this beautiful transformation together.

A Journey of Healing in Oncology

[Clinical Case Sharing: Ovarian Cancer Care]

The patient has a history of ovarian cancer. During her initial visit, her chief complaints were severe lower limb edema (lymphedema) resulting from lymph node removal—it was so swollen that walking was painful—along with ascites.

In addition to water-draining herbs, I prescribed herbs to promote Qi circulation and remove blood stasis, complemented by specialized oncology acupuncture.

At her first follow-up, she happily reported that the lower limb edema had completely resolved, her walking was back to normal, and the ascites had significantly decreased.
However, she was experiencing frequent abdominal pain, diarrhea, poor sleep, p***c pain, and difficulty urinating.

Since intestinal adhesions are common after pelvic surgery, my treatment focus for the second visit shifted to restoring the Qi circulation in the Middle Jiao (中焦).
I kept only a minimal dose (0.5g/day) of two water-draining herbs and completely reformulated the rest of the prescription. This was again paired with oncology acupuncture.

Third week, she returned and shared that her sleep has vastly improved! The abdominal pain and diarrhea have not recurred, her p***c pain and urination difficulties have eased, and the lower limb edema hasn't returned either. 🎉
It turns out that once the body's Qi mechanism is properly restored, even a light dose of water-draining herbs is more than sufficient. 👍

Her chief complaint fourth week was a tight, painful sensation around her surgical scars, making it uncomfortable to stand up or walk for too long. I identified this as a "Tension Pathway" caused by the surgery, which required Qi Gong to release.

My herbal strategy continued to fortify her Middle Jiao, paired with acupuncture. During the treatment, the patient could actually feel the tension and pain profundly melting away. ☺️

----
Despite the skepticism Traditional Chinese Medicine sometimes faces in the world, I firmly believe that TCM can accomplish so much and achieve remarkable results.

Especially in oncology, it can dramatically improve a patient's quality of life—because I witness it with my own eyes in my clinic. I am deeply grateful for the lineage of teachings and the blessings that guide my practice. 🙏
It brings me immense joy to accompany the patients entrusted to my care on their journey back to health, day by day. ❤️

Integrative Cancer Care

TCM or Western Medicine for Cancer? My Recommendation: Both!

This is my clinical experience and honest advice for cancer patients.

Sometimes, patients come to my clinic hoping for an exclusively Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approach for cancer and feel a bit disappointed when I recommend an integrative one.

However, because tumors can grow and spread rapidly, relying solely on TCM is a race against time. While there are anecdotal success stories, the risk is simply too high.

When it comes to life, no one wants to look back and regret not utilizing every weapon available.

On the other hand, I have seen countless cases where patients undergo combined Eastern and Western treatments and go on to live normal, vibrant, and energetic lives.

The role of TCM in cancer care can be divided into three significant stages

🌟 Early Stage (Pre-treatment)
Before undergoing surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation, TCM steps in to build up your constitution.
Through Qi-regulating acupuncture and herbal medicine, we prep your body to be in its best possible state, which actually enhances the effectiveness of Western medical treatments.

🌟 Middle Stage (During Treatment)
Western treatments often come with side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, extreme fatigue, dryness, and mouth ulcers.
By integrating acupuncture and TCM therapies, we can significantly alleviate these symptoms. It vastly improves the patient's quality of life and saves them from a lot of unnecessary suffering.

🌟 Late Stage (Post-treatment)
Once Western treatments conclude, aside from regular check-ups and lifestyle changes, consistent TCM maintenance is vital for improving survival rates.
In oncology, even if scans are clear and there is no recurrence, it is called "remission," not a "cure." Just because a tumor is invisible doesn't mean the cancer cell count in the body is absolute zero. No one knows where they might be hiding or when they might reactivate.

To peacefully coexist with cancer, TCM plays an indispensable role.
Eastern and Western medicine can absolutely work hand-in-hand to keep patients comfortable, healthy, and thriving!

The World’s Leading Cancer Centers Recommend Acupuncture [

It is a common misconception that mainstream Western medicine rejects Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), especially regarding cancer care. Some even fear that TCM might interfere with or delay conventional treatments.

However, what many people don't realize is that the most prestigious cancer centers in the United States have long embraced these therapies. MD Anderson Cancer Center (ranked #1) and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) (ranked #2) both established Integrative Medicine departments years ago.

These world-class institutions have dedicated acupuncture teams to help patients manage and alleviate the side effects of cancer treatments, proving that TCM and Western medicine can work hand-in-hand to improve patient quality of life.

“Helping patients feel more like themselves during the treatment process.” — MSK Cancer Center
As early as 2015, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) produced an educational video highlighting how acupuncture helps cancer patients alleviate treatment-related discomfort.

The video demonstrates that acupuncture can effectively:

✓ Reduce pain

✓ Improve nausea and vomiting

✓ Lower anxiety

✓ Relieve dry mouth (xerostomia)

MSK even offers a specialized cancer care acupuncture training program!

How do I know this? I first heard about it during a lecture by my mentor in Canada on the topic of acupuncture in breast cancer. I have to admit, I was so inspired that I’ve been tempted to fly to the US just to take the course!

My mentor then told me: "You don't have to spend money on that. That is only a certificate, but you have learned all my real-world experience in treating cancer patients through regulating Qi."

He’s right! Clinical experience is far more precious than any certificate.

Based on my experience in the Canadian clinic, my mentor’s Qi-regulating acupuncture (調氣針法) effectively alleviates numerous side effects for patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. By balancing Qi and blood, it reduces fatigue, boosts energy, minimizes nausea, constipation, and diarrhea, eases hot flashes, and stabilizes emotions.
This not only enhances their quality of life but also improves the effectiveness of their conventional treatments.
Many patients would also come back for regular acupuncture even after finishing their chemo or radiation, treating it as essential maintenance to improve cancer survival rates.

The most touching moment of working in an cancer care clinic is seeing a patient, initially so weak that they had to be supported by family members to walk in, leaving the clinic under their own power—refreshed, energized, and feeling comfortable after treatment.

You don't have to spend money on that. That is only a certificate, but you have learned all my experiences of treating cancer patients in real.

Connecting with your body-3 覺察身體-3

"How are your bowel movements?" 「

Patients often answer me: "Normal."

Unless they are long-term patients who know my criteria,
I always follow up with: "Is it once a day? Is it loose, solid or well-formed? Does it stick to the toilet bowl?"

Because what many people perceive as normal often differs from the clinical definition.

1️⃣ Frequency
Normal range is 1–2 times a day, or once every 1–2 days.
If it’s more than 3 times a day or less than once every 3 days, it’s worth investigating.

2️⃣ Shape and Form
The ideal 💩 should be solid or well-formed, resembling a smooth sausage or banana with consistent thickness. If it’s pebbly, fragmented, loose, or "hard at the beginning but soft at the end," there is room for improvement.

3️⃣ Color and Texture
Normal 💩 should be yellowish-brown and non-sticky. It should be flushed easily and not require excessive wiping. If it takes multiple flushes or half a roll of toilet paper to get clean, it’s considered "sticky."

Note: If you rule out food influences and the color remains abnormal (black, red, or grey), please seek medical attention.

4️⃣ Odor
While no 💩 smells like roses, it shouldn't be foul or pungent. Specific odors like rotten eggs, metallic rust, sourness, or a "decaying oil" smell are signals you should report to your doctor.

The Bottom Line:
Having a daily bowel movement doesn't automatically mean everything is "normal."
For some, "smooth" actually means loose or watery stools, which often indicates Spleen and Stomach dysfunction in TCM.

Don't jeopardize your long-term health by ignoring these daily signals.
Next time, take a quick look before you flush!

Wishing everyone a smooth flow and a strong body! 💪

Connecting with your body-2。
"How’s your appetite lately?"

When it comes to appetite and eating habits, there are many subtle signs worth noticing:

1. A sudden surge in appetite or emotional eating
This could be related to "Stomach Fire" (胃火), emotional stress, hormonal fluctuations, or even a reaction to a previous overly restrictive diet.
Simply notice these changes—leave the task of diagnosing the root cause to your TCM practitioner.

2. Loss of appetite (The three types of "not wanting to eat")

Type A: You don't feel hungry at mealtimes, but you can still eat if you have to.

Type B: You feel hungry, but you’re full after just a few bites.

Type C: You don't feel hungry at all and can't manage much food.
Each of these represents a different internal condition.
Being mindful of which type you fall into provides a valuable clue for your doctor.

3. Post-meal discomfort

Bloating: Constant burping or passing gas to feel relief.

Acid Reflux: That "sour" upward sensation.

Urgent Bowel Movements: Feeling the need to run to the bathroom immediately after eating.

Many people say, "I’m not hungry, so I won’t eat."
Often, they get so busy that they skip meals all day, thinking it helps with weight loss. In reality, this slows down your basal metabolic rate (BMR), making it even harder to lose weight! (I’ve noticed people aren't worried about jeopardizing their health, but tell them they'll gain weight, and suddenly they're all ears! XD")

Feeling "too hungry," "not hungry at all," or experiencing discomfort are all signals that something is off. Remember to mention these details to your TCM doctor.
Also, pay attention to what you’ve been feeding yourself lately—your food choices shape your health!

Connecting with your body-1 覺察身體-1

"how is your sleep?"

Regardless of whether a patient’s primary complaint is insomnia, I always ask about their sleep.

The gold standard response I look for is: "No problems at all—I fall asleep instantly, stay asleep until dawn, and wake up feeling refreshed."

However, if I hear "I don't sleep well," a series of diagnostic questions follow:

"Do you have trouble falling asleep? (more than 30 mins)"

"Is it because your mind is racing, or just tossing and turning?"

"Is your sleep deep, or light and easily interrupted?"

"Do you wake up naturally or due to external noise?"

"Do you have nocturia (nighttime urination)? How many times?"

"Can you fall back asleep easily after waking?"

"Do you dream excessively or feel like you're half-awake all night?"

"How is your energy level in the morning?"

You can also track these details to monitor your own sleep quality. My long-term patients and I have developed a great rapport—they’ll directly tell me which specific parts are off, so I don’t have to go through the whole list! 😆 When they say they’re sleeping well, it means all the boxes above are checked. 👌

----
A quick story from the clinic:
Recently, a young new patient came for a follow-up. When I asked if she still experienced nocturia, she said with surprise: "It's gone! I always thought it was normal because I drink water at night. Doesn't everyone have that?"

At her age, I don’t consider nocturia-disrupted sleep to be "normal." Although I didn't prescribe medicine specifically for nocturia, my treatment focused on regulating the Qi flow (調暢氣機), which clearly suited her body perfectly—addressing the nocturia as a natural result. 👍
