Dear Colleagues:

We are pleased to invite you to “OpenWide: Learning from Data in Dentistry”. This one-day scientific symposium will be held in Houston, Texas on October 12, 2022, as an affiliated meeting of the ADA SmileCon 2022 (https://www.ada.org/education/smilecon). More information about OpenWide can be found here (https://reg.learningstream.com/reg/event_page.aspx?ek=0026-0016-cf003c984244413b9e63f19e2af9ced6).

The overarching goal of the scientific symposium is to introduce the concept of learning health systems to the practising dental community and to identify and discuss cutting-edge research and strategies using data for improving quality and patient safety in the dental care setting. The morning session will start with an inspiring opening keynote from Dr Charles Friedman from the University of Michigan. A series of talks from thought leaders in dentistry will follow discussing:

Best practices in the measurement of quality and safety, and the technology infrastructure needed.
How to use design thinking to turn knowledge into strategies for improving dental quality and safety, and
How to implement and evaluate improvement strategies in dental practice.

Invited conference participants will include practising dentists, dental researchers, quality improvement experts, informaticians, insurers, EHR vendors/developers, dental students, and members of dental professional bodies and dental service organizations.

As a key stakeholder, we would be delighted if you could attend this important event to help strengthen the patient safety and quality improvement initiative within dentistry.

Application of AI to promote the paradigm shift in dentistry and medicine

Advanced technology is originated from demanding of everyday life. Thanks to the development of computer science, Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) have been used widely in our life. Patient center is always the aim in the medical field. Share Decision Making (SDM) is of importance to the communication between doctor and patient. SDM is also important refer to the treatment planning. If AR and VR can be applied widely in medical field, it will be helpful not only in clinic but also for the education purpose.
Association for Dental Education, Asia Pacific (ADEAP) is going to organize a virtual meeting for the theme of “Application of digital transformation to face the challenge of paradigm shift in dentistry and medicine” on 15th May, 2022 from 09:00-15:30 GMT+8. We’ve invite speakers in different expertise from different dental schools.
Please join us for this symposium.

Dear Colleagues,

I hope everything goes well with you even under the COVID-19 pandemic. Strategy of lock-down has been utilized as a strict policy to limit the spread out of the pandemic. Many issues seem to be ceased. But the running of the earth won’t be stopped, the young generation continue to grow. Thus the dental education should be carried on, but in a modified way.

From Face-to-face to the on-line learning, we are facing the challenge of paradigm shift of dental education during the covid-19 pandemic. Impact of the covid-19 pandemic on the student academic experience is brought into sharp relief set up by "Students Academic Experience Survey 2021" published on 24th June, 2021 by Advance HE and the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) written by Jonathan Neves and Rachel Hewitt. It postulated that increased number of students felt their expectations were not met. 54% of these said there was too little in-person contact with other students.51% said there was too little in-person interaction with staff. Regarding "How to improve the academic experience?" the top one identified by the students was: Improve assessment feedback. The quality assurance and assessment of on-line courses for dental education remains an undetected issue in Asia Pacific region.

We organize an ADEAP meeting in title of “Paradigm shift of dental education during the COVID-19 pandemic in Asia Pacific” to be held on 12th September from 13:00-17:00 (GMT+8) via webinar. Each country is cordially invited to give a 10 minutes presentation regarding to the quality assurance and assessment of on-line learning in his own country. The presenters are the country representative or recommended by the country representative.

Before the symposium, we organize a session of “International Collaboration with Country Association” to enhance the collaboration between Dental Education

Associations from Korea, Japan, Australia and ADEAP. We have invited the Chief Executive Officer of Australian Dental Council (ADC) Professor Narelle Mills, President of Japan Association for Dental Education (JADE) Professor Akiyama Hitoshi, President of Korea Institute of Dental Education and Evaluation (KIDEE), each of them will give a 15minutes speech regarding to their own Association and the possibility of future collaboration with ADEAP.

Besides these, President of Philippine Association of Dental College (PADC) Dean Professor Arturo de Leon will also give a speech regarding to the future collaboration of PADC (composed of 27 dental schools in Philippine) with ADEAP and sign an MOU for sister link agreement. Taiwan Association of Dental Education will also sign an MOU for sister link agreement with ADEAP in this session. I believe this will enhance the international collaboration of dental education in Asia Pacific.

Since our 1st meeting which was held on 6th Aug. 2019 in Kuala Lumpur, because of the challenge of the pandemic, instead of physical meeting, we’ve organized several on-line symposiums and published 3 manuscripts in scientific journal:

Even though there is no physical meeting can be held during this period, but the progress of the Association should be carried on. Matters of election for the officers for the next term will be announced in the end of this symposium.

Participants are free to attend the meeting. But pre-registration (https://forms.gle/k4swP4QGieXeqRNc6) before 5th September, 2021 is required since the number of participants are limited, because of the limitation of the ZOOM meeting.

Looking forward to your participation.

Poor oral health in Australia: the unrecognised barrier to overall health
Register for a conversation on oral health issues and affordability in Australia.

Join our panel of health experts on 26 August as they discuss how the lack of affordable oral health care increases the burden of disease in Australia, and what it will take to change this trend.
Poor oral health has a major impact on personal wellbeing and society. Oral diseases are associated with cardiovascular disease and stroke, diabetes, oral cancers, lung conditions, and can negatively impact pregnancies.

Lack of access to affordable oral health care increases the burden of disease in Australia, often resulting in overall poor health and hospitalisation for those citizens who cannot afford out of pocket dental expenses.

Hear from our panel of health experts as they discuss opportunities for better access to oral health care in Australia.

Speakers
Moderator: Dr Coralie Wales, Community and Consumer Partnerships, Western Sydney Local Health District
Professor Joerg Eberhard, Chair of Lifespan Oral Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health
Associate Professor Shilpi Ajwani, Faculty of Medicine and Health
Dr Stephen Duckett, Health and Aged Care Program Director, Grattan Institute
Dr Alex Abrahams, Chairman of Group Homes Australia
