17 year-old Harron came with complaints of swelling and the sudden onset of severe pain in his left sc***um; he could hardly move.
Antipain medications were given and various tests were done to ascertain the ascertain condition. He was sent to a urologist and imaging results showed a strangulation of blood vessels around the te**es. An urgent operation was successfully done to correct the condition.
Five days later, Harron came in for assessment and dressing. He reported good progress and much less pain. What a relief! He is already back at school, preparing for his important Form 4 government exams coming in only a couple of weeks.

First baby born at Dashir Community Maternity Ward! - July 13, 2026.
From Shirley: Eunice is 22 years old. She comes from a village far from Dashir and purposely walked with her mother two hours to help the labor come sooner. They had a plan B for a vehicle to collect them if needed.
At 11:30 am, only an hour after arriving at our maternity ward, Eunice birthed a healthy baby boy. He was 3.4 kg (7.48 lbs).
I enjoyed holding the baby, singing to him while mom could sleep.
She has a beautiful 3 year-old girl at home named Jocelyn.
Eunice's mother is very sweet and brought tea/food for her daughter, her youngest child. Families bring food to hospitals when they have someone admitted. We talked in Swahili about our children. Grandma has 12 grandchildren and 10 are boys! This fellow is the newest addition.
We are grateful for this new beginning, made possible by many beautiful hands and hearts.

Jambo Jambo everyone! It's been a long time. I decided to take an extended Facebook leave, with permission from the boss!
For now, let me simply tell you that ... get ready for it ... OUR MATERNITY WARD IS OPEN! πŸ™Œ These past two years of building, preparation, and approvals weren't easy, but it is so worth it for the young women and children in our Kikwe community.
This would not be possible without the many hard-working hands and the many generous hearts in Tanzania and around the world, including you. Asante sana. As a physical gesture of thanks, I would like you to give yourself a pat on the back, on my behalf. Do it now, please. :)
Stay tuned for regular updates and stories, as we continue to work together in health and hope. πŸ«±πŸ»β€πŸ«²πŸ½

Another small beginning, this past Friday, with life-changing health implications: One of our nurse-midwives leads a short seminar for our antenatal moms who attend our clinic for a monthly check-up.

Four year-old Khalima was brought in by her mother with a bleeding cut wound on the lower right leg. The mother was terrified, with her child crying in shock and pain. The bleeding was controlled, and some stitches were applied. Khalima, finally at peace, was discharged with some medicine for pain and infection. As of this week, after two follow-up visits, she is healing well.

Every April and May, during the long rainy season, the dry riverbed that divides Dashir from the village centre is full of water much of the time. This makes our health centre inaccessible to many people coming on foot, unless they can wade through the water - NOT a good idea for the elderly, sick, young children, and pregnant moms. Now they have access all year, and so do the children attending school who are living on the Dashir side.
The appreciation for this project in our community is palpable. Kudos to Elisante and his proud construction team, together with some village volunteers, for making it happen. And thanks to YOU, our faithful supporters, for giving and standing with us, together in health and hope. πŸ«±πŸ»β€πŸ«²πŸΌ

Jambo Jambo! A new infrastructure project is happening, recently requested by the Kikwe community. In a month or so, this will be crucial for the daily health of many villagers. Can you guess why?
45 patients today! The RCH* mother-child clinic is growing; love the focus on preventative health. Tuesdays and Fridays are RCH days (*Reproductive Child Health).

Antony, a 4 year old boy, was recently brought in by his parents. He had blood in his urine and extreme pain in his abdomen. The parents reported a similar complaint a couple of days earlier, but ignored it and thought it would go away.
A urine analysis showed many bacteria. An abdominal ultrasound was performed, showing swollen bladder walls as the possible cause for blood in the urine, suggesting a severe infection.
Antony underwent a 5-day IV treatment, after which he regained normal urine frequency, with no blood in the urine and no more pain.
He was scheduled to return for a follow up after one week. The parents were advised on early pro-active intervention for such an issue.

16 year old Samwel, from a nearby school, came in with diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite. He looked very ill, dehydrated and with high fever.
Lab tests were performed, which showed an infection in Samwel’s stomach. He was treated, put on oral medication, and counselled on personal hygiene, safe water use, and good sanitation.
Samwel left with a smile on his face. :)
