Haya ndiyo maadili yetu…
Maadili ya dini yetu…
Maadili aliyotufundisha Mtume Muhammad (rehema na amani zimshukie).

Ahmed Deedat (Allah amrehemu) alisema:

Mtu hutoa sadaka akisema:

Athari nzuri hubaki, hata k**a mwenyewe ameondoka duniani.

In Tanzania, the trend of students entering public and private universities at ages 16/17 to 18 is growing. While academic excellence is celebrated, this "early start" creates a serious legal and social gap that many Tanzanian families overlook. We celebrate when our children "crush" the GCE at 16 to 17. We rush to see their selection lists. But have we stopped to ask: Who is looking after them once they get to campus? We assume they are old enough because academically they have axcelled it.

We are in a "In Loco Parentis" Trap. In Tanzania, a child is legally anyone under 18. However, Tanzanian universities generally do not act in loco parentis (in place of a parent). The Reality is, on campus, your 16 17/18-year-old is treated like a 25-year-old adult. If they face peer pressure, mental health struggles, or "campus life" temptations, the university often views them as autonomous adults responsible for their own choices. If your child cannot legally sign a contract, get a passport without your signature, or buy a drink at a local bar, why do we think they are ready to manage their own lives in a UDSM, SAUT, or MUST, IRDP, UDOM hostels and expecially at own accomodation? And most of these little ones are coming from boarding schools, one of the most controlled environments straight to university one of the most unregulated environment. For 4 to 6 years, they lived under the watchful eye of matrons, wardens, and strict strict rules.
Then, suddenly, at age 16, 17 or 18, they find themselves in a university hostel, a shock to their system. A minor who has never had to self-regulate is suddenly expected to manage total freedom with 28, 27 year old school mates, in places they do not understand.

We inhabit a society that legally protects minors from the consequences of entering contracts or purchasing alcohol because they are deemed developmentally "in process". Cannot get married, cannot think on their own, Yet, we expect these same children to navigate an adult campus environment, filled with complex social pressures and zero direct supervision and emerge unscathed. This is a serious safeguarding issue of children who are academically ready but socially and legally vulnerable . Educating a child does not stop on academics, we can think of bridging programs or gap year internships that focus on emotional intelligence and real-world skills. Or are we going to blame it on poverty or we are just a country which does not believe in preparation for life and understand the purpose of childhood and the concept of formative years?

Our focus is too much on academics, forgeting there is life after academics. Intelligence is not maturity. We are talking more of mental health issues these days, I bet you if we check you will realise this is one of the causes. We are sacrificing our children’s childhood for academic speed because we think once we have a graduate , we have passed the test of good parenting. We have turned parenting into a sprint to the graduation gown. We treat a degree like a "certificate of successful parenting," but we forget that we are raising human beings, not just "graduates." Graduating early doesnt guarantee a good life. The goal of parenting is not to produce a graduate as fast as possible, it is to release an adult who is whole, resilient, and ready for the world.
