Amboni Caves in Tanga 🇹🇿
The Amboni Caves are an extensive limestone cave system situated in Kiomoni village, about 8 km north of Tanga City along the Tanga–Mombasa road in Tanga Region, Tanzania. They are widely considered the largest limestone caves in East Africa and are a prominent natural landmark in the region.
Geologically, the caves were formed around 150 million years ago during the Jurassic period, when the area was part of a shallow sea. Over millions of years, water dissolved the limestone to create the intricate underground chambers and tunnels you see today. The whole system covers roughly 234 km² of limestone formations.
