From Hive to High-Performance Skincare 🐝

Last month, microbiologists and biochemists from Nelson Mandela University returned with fresh data on our mangrove honey — an ingredient woven into our formulations. The results left us buzzing:

Along the mangrove fringe, women farmers tend hives where bees boost pollination — and the women are paid not just for what they harvest, but for restoring and protecting the land itself.

“Tell us your story — how did it all start?”

Before Mwani Zanzibar became a growing skincare brand, it was a seaweed project on the verge of collapse.

As co-founder, I don’t often share the full version — the part where a job became a mission.

When I arrived, the project supporting women seaweed farmers was days from shutting down. Like so many philanthropic efforts, it followed a familiar pattern: a burst of funding, a flurry of activity — and silence once the money ran out. The doors closed. The women were left behind.

We started with nothing.
No grants. No investors.
Just two suitcases, my two kids, and a belief that things could be done differently.

Running a business here is famously hard.
The “unspoken rules” were real — and I didn’t play the game.
I just wanted to make good soap and do something meaningful.
Apparently, that was naïve.

As a girl raised in the West, I was taught to expect to be heard.
That’s not always how it works here — especially for women doing things differently.

But I’ve developed deep respect for women of African descent who build in these conditions.
The hoops are many — and they are flaming.

And yet, paradise is real. Life here is extraordinary.
Mwani is a once-in-a-lifetime mission.

From the start, the goal was to build something with the women — not for them.
And we did.

Women who never went to school now manage traceability, oversee production, and lead with quiet strength.

Today, Mwani Zanzibar sits on luxury shelves in LA, Paris, and Cape Town.
It still feels surreal.
