Fall-inspired look, TAKE TWO.

I think this one’s a little closer in terms of vibe to the Thanksgiving baking accouterments I found at Michael’s the other day… More fall, and less summer, with shimmery reddish copper lids, bronze cheeks and nude-beige lips.

I wore it to the bakery the other day… The bakery in my kitchen, THAT IS! Had this on while trying to work out the pumpkin/pecan cupcake situation (yes, this is a thing I’m working on). In a nutshell, I think I found a good balance between a spicy pumpkin cupcake, and brown sugar pecans, but that’s a story for another time…

As for this look, here are some things you may find helpful when wearing reddish copper eyeshadow, or really any shadows with red tones:

1. Full-coverage foundations make a HUGE difference

You know me; I like to wear as little as possible in terms of base products, but whenever I try to do minimal foundation/concealer that incorporates any sort of copper, coppery red or red eyeshadow, I look tired, messy and juuuuust not right. Babe, if you’ve got anything remotely red happening on your lids, then go for full-coverage foundation.

I say this every December, but where did the year go?? Has it really been a year? I worked as a legal assistant at a law firm in my 20s, and one of the lawyers said something I still remember. He said that time moves faster as you get older, and I didn’t understand it at the time, but I totally get it now. Nowadays, it feels like I go from task to task to task until I pass out. Then I wake up and do it all over again. Then I look up and it’s December, and another year has passed!

Anyway, my life (and my makeup) changed in quite a few ways this year…

The biggest change happened in the spring, when my sweet boy Tabs crossed over to the rainbow bridge.

I’ve finally gotten to where I can think about him without feeling a sharp pain in my heart… There’s still sadness, but it’s somewhat easier to bear. I really, really miss that thug, and I still have days when I really wish I could hold him and smell the fur on his “delicious belly meat” just one more time, but it’s getting better.

World Cancer Day.

Cancer is a complex disease in different dimensions, pure research (causes and evolution at genetic level or Carcinogenesis), Clinical research (diagnosis, therapies, prognosis, palliative care, psychology…), epidemiology, social impact, etc…

This implies a great transversality that involves the collaboration of multidisciplinary teams: doctors, chemists, physicists, engineers, etc…

When you read the word “multidisciplinary” you can be sure that Physics has a major role in those teams.

And in therapy research, Particle Physics (in combination with Applied Physics) has much to say, and of course CERN is the main front.

Below are some of their lines of research, initiatives, resources and outcomes already in use:

The Collaborative Ependymoma Research Network (CERN). Site - Wikipedia.

The European Network for LIGht ion Hadron Therapy - What is Hadron-therapy?

ACE.- ACE brings together an international team of physicists, biologists and medics to study the biological effects of antiprotons

ULICE - Union of Light Ion Centres in Europe

CERN intensifies medical physics research via IOP medicalphysicsweb (Feb 24, 2014).

Particle therapy (Wikipedia entry)

I don’t love cowlicks, but cowlicks love me. [Insert crying-face emojis right here 😭😭😭.] My cowlick situation was almost mildly tolerable before I started growing out my grays, but now it’s next level orange alert!!!

It’s the texture of the gray hairs, man. They’re wirier than my non-gray hairs, and the short, stubby pieces stick out, especially the hairs right smack dab in the middle of my hairline and in the center of my part.

If I leave them be, I look like I’m being mildly electrocuted… Hence Oribe Free Styler Working Hairspray.

Expensive as it is [$42 for a 9-oz. bottle, OMG!], I love this stuff. I’ve been into it ever since I sprayed about half a can on my bangs for the victory rolls I did for Halloween. The rolls stayed put and weren’t crunchy, and you know me when it comes to crunchy hair (not a fan). When I took my hair down that night before bed, even after ALL that hairspray, I was able to run a brush through it without any flakes or tugging.

Which is rad.

What takes this stuff from “nice” to “must-have” for me is how well it handles crazy cowlicks and those stubs of wayward gray hair.

Are you ready for 14 Days of Ravishing Red? Stay tuned as we explore ravishing red 💄 lipsticks, lip liners and glosses every day on our way to 💕 Valentine’s.

Ya know…some days you just feel like a fire engine 🚒 red on your lips. A blazingly bold, no-questions-asked red that doesn’t pussyfoot around — a red that isn’t a beige red, or a pinkish red. It isn’t a coral or brown. It’s just really, really, really red.

MAC Fashion Legacy Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour ($21, and one of 28 shades) is that kind of red.

The Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolours have a mousse-y consistency, and they’re thicker than many other liquid lipsticks. They’re also great for long work days, after-work parties, weddings, proms and other big events because you won’t have to retouch them every 15 minutes. Basically, they last long (it’s one of the perks of a liquid lipstick), and you can apply them without a lip pencil.

Fashion Legacy is one of my “going out” reds because it’s bright and opaque and festive and 🎉🥂🎈 fun. And it goes well with anything, ESPECIALLY black winged liner and long lashes (including falsies, if you can put them on without poking your eye out…WHICH I ALMOST DID ONCE, OMG!).

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any hotter… HA HA!

Tabs always knew how to heat things up on set, whether it be with a smoldering look, a cheeky turn of his bum, or a playful paw placement. His summer kitty modeling campaigns were some of his favorites, and during the peak of his career, we were traveling. A lot. Tuscany one week and NYC the next.

It was some of the most challenging and satisfying work of my pet assisting career.

I miss the private jet, especially…

Here’s a few more of the most iconic summer modeling campaigns from Tabs.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Pics, arm swatches and lip swatches of MAC Shiny Pretty Things…as well as commentary/thoughts from the perspective of a 40-something-year-old woman who loves MAC and makeup. 😊 Please note, this is just the makeup collection, not the gift sets or kits. The whole collection is LE and available now at MAC counters and online. If you’d like to see the makeup in action, check out this post, this post and this post. For reference, I’m an NC42.

If you like shimmer, shine, frost, pearl and/or glitter, and you’re cool with the fact that it’s already the holidays for makeup companies, this MAC holiday collection is both shiny and pretty. It radiaties megawatts of luminescence. Of the 21 pieces, all which are bedecked/bedazzled in limited edition shiny silver packaging, only one has absolutely no shine to it — a hot pink matte lipstick called Both Cheeks ($19.50), which is gorgeous, by the way. It’s like a matte version of Show Orchid.

I suppose you could also consider creamy beige-pink Babetown Lipstick ($19.50) as something other than shiny, because it isn’t as shiny as the other items in the release, but it is technically a Cremesheen, so it’s still kinda shiny… It’s also the thing I’ve been wearing most from this entire collection.

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Good question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past gazillion years (more than 10!). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a great start. 👍

1. The three lip colors you wear most often?

Ooh! — this one’s easy. Pink, coral and blue…

(Yes, j/k about that last one, LOL. It’s not blue. It’s brown.)

2. Have you ever had a lemonade stand?

Not formally, no, but I vaguely recollect lining up Dixie cups on the sidewalk outside my house, filling them with water from the hose, and selling pretend lemonade to my friend Karrie who lived next door for the low, low price of three leaves. 🍂

3. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this summer?

The long days. I love that it stays light so long and late into the evening. I swear, I get a lot more done (the only problem is trying to go to bed early sometimes when it’s still broad daylight at 9).

Circle of life

Alex Mustard, UK

Nikon D850 + 28–70mm f3.5–4.5 lens at 31mm + Nauticam Wide Angle Conversion Port; 1/60 sec at f11; ISO 500; Subal housing; two Seacam Seaflash 150D strobes

In the clear water of the Red Sea, a shoal of bigeye trevally circle 80 feet down at the edge of the reef. For the past 20 years Alex has travelled here, to Ras Mohammad—a national park at the tip of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula—to photograph the summer-spawning aggregations of reef fish. This time, it was the high numbers of bigeye trevally. Their circling behavior is a dating exercise prior to pairing up, though it also deters predators. Alex captured the shape of the shoal against the deep blue water below, the iridescent angled fish reflecting the light from the sun and his strobes.

Commons: European Science Photo Competition 2015

European culture cannot be imagined without European science. It’s not enough to just speak about it, it must also be shown. In order to do so, there is a need to capture and share it. This is why it is necessary to have a science photo competition. First such competition will take place in November 2015.

Image categories

People in Science (scientists in their natural habitat), Microscopy images (optical, electron, and scanning probe microscopy images), Non-photographic media (audio and video files, computer-generated imagery etc.), Image sets (2–10 images that are thematically linked and submitted as set), and General category (all else goes into this category from archaeology to zoology and from vulcanology to astronomy).

Rules

TLDR: as a participant, you only need to know, what images you want to submit and what is depicted on them. Just go to your local upload page and follow the instructions there.

Your Fourth of July fun fact! — aerial fireworks go by several different names, many of which are botanically themed…like peony, dahlia and chrysanthemum.

Coincidentally, I was thinking about vibrant, dynamic peonies when I did this eye look.

As each boom radiates outward, the circumference of each colorful circle has a defined shape, but as it expands, each individual point of light trails off ever so slightly until it disappears.

For the eye, I tried to convey the radiating roundness with the half-moon shape, and then spread the bronze and ruby red glitters outward.

For the lips, I experimented with two different styles — one, an opaque, editorial (a.k.a. “artsy-fartsy”) matte red; and the other a sheer raspberry, which I think is slightly more wearable.

Um…is red glitter ever wearable, though? DISCUSS. 😁

EYES
Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner in Stonewall and Volume, and MAC Ruby Glitter (worn as eyeshadow); It Cosmetics Brow Power Micro in Universal Taupe, MAC Teddy Liner, Chanel Dimensions de Chanel Mascara

BASE
MAC 24HR Studio Fix Concealer (worn as foundation), Benefit Boing Hydrating Concealer in No.

Every once in a while, I get this crazy hankering to do things like wear every single blush in my collection.

Not all at once, mind you (although that would be kinda fun) — but one blush per day. Or, to try on every single lipstick I own.

OMG. Like, how long would this actually take me? I’ve been trying to do the math, and I estimate it would take roughly FOR-EV-ER.

Yeah, I’m still cleaning out my makeup drawers, but I’m seriously considering doing the blush thing, even if it’s just to make my way through my MAC blushes…and maybe NARS…and I’m realizing right now that homegirl’s got a thing for warm peachy coral blush. It’s PRETTY obvious when I see them all together, HA HA HA!

Have you ever tried something like this? — using every lip product or blush in your makeup collection? I think it could be quite fun and weirdly satisfying in an OCD way.

In today’s news, I’ll be chipping away at Marie Kondo-ing my makeup today, among doing other things, including prepping the condo for the work that starts next week.

About that, none of it is terribly exciting work at this point.
