Yesterday we had the privilege of participating in the District Water and Sanitation Advocacy Meeting organized by the Busia District Local Government.
The engagement brought together key stakeholders from government departments, NGOs, and the water and sanitation sector to reflect on the FY 2025/2026 performance and align on priorities for 2026/2027.

Discussions highlighted the importance of:
✔️Strengthening collaboration across sectors
✔️Enhancing community access to safe water and sanitation
✔️Promoting sustainable and inclusive WASH interventions

We value such platforms that foster dialogue, accountability, and collective action toward improved community health and wellbeing. We remain committed to contributing to solutions that ensure equitable access to water, sanitation, and hygiene services, especially for vulnerable communities.

We recently had the privilege of participating in a two-day multi-sectoral engagement in Busia, convened by ChildFund International.

Day 1 brought together caregivers from Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers, district education leaders, and school heads. As civil society partners, we listened and learned from caregivers’ lived experiences gaining deeper insight into the realities of delivering quality early childhood education. The discussions highlighted critical gaps in support systems and the need for stronger collaboration and capacity building.

Day 2 focused on strengthening community health systems. We engaged with health workers, peer educators, and Village Health Teams, and shared progress on our Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) interventions. This created a valuable platform for alignment, shared learning, and reflection.
Key areas of focus included:
• Expanding access to SRHR information and services at community level
• Strengthening referral pathways between communities and health facilities
• Enhancing the role of peer educators and VHTs
• Building sustainable, inclusive partnerships

Moving forward, we remain committed to deepening collaboration with government and community stakeholders to ensure that SRHR services are accessible, inclusive, and responsive especially for young people and vulnerable populations.

Our Executive Director Omondi Eric is participating in a dialogue with clan and cultural leaders of the Bugwe Kingdom to explore how socio-cultural norms continue to contribute to gender-based violence within our communities.

As key actors connecting culture, young people, and emerging social trends, we recognize the power and influence cultural leaders hold in shaping attitudes, values, and behaviors in society.

This dialogue is only the beginning of a broader effort to work together toward our shared goal, creating safer and more supportive environments for young women and girls across our communities.

Let us join our efforts to champion and build cultures that protect, respect, and empower women and girls.

Today, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of women and girls everywhere. At ASHWA, we recognize that when women are empowered, communities grow stronger and more hopeful. Through our work in education, health, and community development, we have seen how women continue to lead change, support their families, and inspire the next generation.

This International Women’s Day, we stand with all women and girls in the call for rights, equality, and empowerment. We celebrate the voices that speak up, the hands that build, and the leaders who continue to shape a better future for our communities.

Let us keep working together to create spaces where every woman and girl is valued, supported, and given the opportunity to thrive.
