Who said museums are only meant for closed spaces?

The Traditional Medicine in Transition project is changing that narrative, taking the museum into communities, creating conversations, sharing knowledge and bringing Uganda’s traditional medicine heritage closer to the people.

This is culture, research and storytelling on the move.

Powerful seminar this afternoon at Makerere University as our own Dr. Yahaya Sekagya unpacked the complex relationship between religion, witchcraft, poverty, and power in African communities. Honest, uncomfortable, necessary conversations guided brilliantly by Dr. Jimmy Spire Ssentongo.

The mobile museum is changing how people experience culture and knowledge in Uganda.

For a long time, museums have been seen as places you have to travel to quiet spaces behind walls, often far from the communities whose stories they hold. The mobile museum takes a different approach. It moves and reaches people where they are.

Through the Traditional Medicine in Transition project, the mobile museum travels across the country, bringing research, stories and cultural knowledge directly to communities. It carries exhibitions on traditional medicine, plant knowledge and lived practices that are deeply rooted in everyday life.

This is about connection, people see familiar plants, hear voices that reflect their own experiences and engage with knowledge that has been passed down through generations.

It also creates access. Schools, rural communities and public spaces that may never have the chance to visit a museum can now experience one. It opens up learning in a way that is simple, inclusive and engaging.

The Traditional Medicine in Transition mobile museum is creating new ways for people to experience Uganda’s knowledge systems.

Through exhibitions, storytelling and field research, it brings together culture, science and community in one space. It allows people to see, learn and reflect on the role of traditional medicine today.

As the exhibition continues to move across the country, it opens up conversations about preservation, respect for indigenous knowledge and the future of health and conservation.

This is a platform for connection, learning and understanding.
