An intervertebral disc is a fibro cartilaginous cushion located between each vertebra in the spinal column. There are 23 discs in the human spine.

They act as vital shock absorbers and allow the spine to bend, twist, and flex while holding the vertebrae securely together

Anatomy of a Disc

• Nucleus Pulposus:
The inner, jelly-like core primarily made of water, collagen, and proteoglycans.

• Annulus Fibrosus
The tough, fibrous outer ring of alternating concentric bands.

Vertebral Endplates:
Layers of cartilage that anchor the disc to the adjacent vertebrae above and below.

Common Disc Problems

Herniated Disc

Occurs when the soft nucleus pulposus pushes out (herniates) through a tear in the annulus fibrosus, which can press on surrounding nerves and cause pain or sciatica.

Degenerative Disc Disease

The natural wear-and-tear or drying out of the disc over time, which can lead to reduced shock absorption and stiffness
