ABSTEMIOUSNESS.
To be abstemious is to be moderate or sparing in the use of certain things, including an excess of even good food. It also means to be temperate, to have moderation or self-restraint. It also means to totally avoid certain substances or activities. According to Ellen G. White "in order to preserve health, temperance in all things is neccessary,---temperance in Labour, temperance in eating and drinking". A moderate and discipline life will not use the things of this life in excess. In the Bible Paul, the Apostle counsel us to be "temperate in all things" 1 Cor. 9:25. This means that we should shun that which which is harmful, avoid unneeded extremes, and be moderate in the enjoyment of those things which are lawful.
Healthy body, mind and soul is impossible without careful, temperate living. The following are the basic principle of abstemiousness and moderation in daily living.

1. Be regular in your meals. Do not eat them early or late but maintain a regular schedule.

2. Moderation. Only eat as much as you need. Never overeat.

3. Avoid alcohol and smoking

4. Eat to satisfy hunger and then stop.

5. Take small bite of food. Only put a small amount in your mouth at a time.

6. Relax and eat slowly.

7. Do not eat too much at a meal.

8. Avoid complicated mixtures at a meal. Keep your meal simple.

9. Avoid artificial sweeteners and additives.

10. Never eat anything prepared in aluminium (I am guilty of this too but my consolation is that I detoxify my body regularly).

11. Drink liquid between meals and not with your meals.

12. As a rule eat your fruits at one meal and vegetable at another.

13. Reduce or eliminate refine sugar and sugar foods.

14. Avoid spices and condiments which cause stomach upset.

15. Avoid or reduce fried foods.

16. Avoid or reduce pastries, iced cream and all other delicacies.

17. Avoid or reduce white flour products.

18. Do not use hard drugs.

19. Avoid medicinal drugs to whenever extent that you can.
