There is so much fear around Vitamin A and pregnancy. But is it really valid?

If you are talking about high-dose synthetic vitamin A supplements, then the answer is yes. It is well known that synthetic forms can cause birth defects. But we shouldn't be lumping naturally occurring vitamin A into this and fear-mongering.

The chances of you over consuming vitamin A is unlikely, especially if are not eating organ meats. You would need to consume more than 20,000 IU per day of retinol (not beta-carotene) over the course of weeks/months to induce an overdose dietarily. Four out of 5 women of childbearing age in the US aren't even meeting the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) much less exceeding the upper limit. If you are not eating liver, likely, you are actually not getting enough vitamin A!

The amount of vitamin A reserves found in liver is not static and can range from 3,000 IU per 3 oz to 12,000 IU per 3 oz, with some sources (depending on region and diet) can be upward of 25,000 IU per ounce serving. This includes your cod liver oil fish oil supplements. But liver also contains vitamin D and K2 which have been shown to mitigate vitamin A's toxicity. This is a perfect example of how a food-first approach is superior over supplementation.

I recommend my clients consume liver and other organ meats a few times a week, less often in the first trimester but once my clients are in the late second trimester it's time to increase that intake as vitamin A is CRUCIAL for labor. More on that to come.

Next to protein, fiber is a huge miss in a lot of people's diets. It is one of the most well-researched supplements and food products but yet still doesn't get the attention it really deserves. It is easy to overlook the simple things like getting enough protein and fiber when the internet is full of enticing cleanses, detox, functional tests, and new supplements.

But I promise including enough fiber in your diet can make a HUGE difference in your overall health.

Aim for 30-35g of fiber a day. This should come from whole foods, like avocado which contains about 14g of fiber.

Cocoa powder also has a surprising amount of fiber, coming in at 3g in two tablespoons. I love adding cocoa powder to smoothies and, as a treat, homemade hot chocolate!

Protein isn't just for building muscles, it's for building healthy reproductive systems and babies!

More and more research is coming out that shows the current protein recommendations are way too freakin' low!

As the origin of the word implies, protein should come first to your mind when thinking about how to optimize your overall health, especially increasing your odds of pregnancy and birth outcomes. Protein intake can directly influence ovulation.

Further, not all protein sources are created equal. Animal-sourced proteins, aka quality proteins, are utilized by your body at a higher rate. Animal-sourced proteins also contain the majority of the baby-making nutrients you need to form a healthy baby, plant sources fall very short in this regard.

Not sure how much protein you need to be eating? Let's chat! This will be one of the first things we discuss in our session together because it is truly foundational. Without enough protein, your body literally cannot do its basic jobs much less make a baby.

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that is CRUCIAL for fertility. The active form, retinol, plays a central role in both men's and women's reproduction functions.

It is essential for men's testosterone and s***m production and in women, vitamin A deficiency is shown to contribute to irregular ovulation, impaired hormone product, especially progesterone, as well as higher rates of miscarriage. In animal studies, it has been shown that supplementation can improve ovulatory function, egg quality, progesterone levels, and embryonic survival.

My top food for obtaining vitamin A is liver! Research shows that men who regularly eat liver actually have better s***m parameters. So eat up ladies and gents!
