TRHA attended the NRHA-sponsored State Rural Health Association (SRHA) Leadership Conference this week in Portland, OR, an exclusive event for SRHA leaders. The National Rural Health Association plays a crucial role in uniting SRHA’s, providing resources to enhance advocacy to improve health and healthcare access in rural communities. The conference enabled TRHA to learn from peers, share best practices, and advance our strategic goals.

State Rural Health Associations are key collaboration hubs, facilitating knowledge sharing, partnerships, and unified statewide advocacy for rural health. With NRHA’s invaluable support and guidance,
TRHA remains steadfast in our commitment to expanding member benefits and advocating for the health and well-being of rural Texans.

We sincerely thank NRHA for their leadership and this opportunity!

It’s clear that we can help beat cancer with early detection and treatment. Multi-cancer early detection (MCED) tests are a gamechanger in this fight. They can detect many different cancer types in early stages. For more patients to have access to MCED tests, Congress must pass the Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Screening Coverage Act. With this bill, we can help end late-stage cancer. THANK YOU to U.S. Reps. Jodey Arrington, Rep. Lloyd Doggett and Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne for your leadership on this measure!

About Their Presentation: A major aspect of health is mental health, and rural mental health care has been found to be lacking. Approximately 570 counties across the United States have a shortage of counselors, 80 Texas counties do not have assigned counseling providers and many counties have low counselor availability or limited access (Hurtado, 2022). In 2021, Mental Health America’s (2021) annual report ranked Texas the worst state in the United States for access to mental health care. This is a social justice issue. The counseling profession is guided by advocacy competencies including community collaboration and systems advocacy. Join Dr. Fox and Dr. Helmcamp as they discuss how we can better serve the mental health needs of rural Texas.

With small-town hospitals closing across Texas, many communities are rethinking their approach to health care as they reimagine community health models, lean into telemedicine, and more.

In Tyler, there's a new health college in the works, and Texans are relocating to the East Texas city amid excitement about local opportunities in the medical field. This type of focus and innovation around rural health care has benefited from investment approved by state lawmakers.

Join us and for a lunch event at Tyler Junior College or online at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, for a conversation about opportunities and innovations in rural health care. Jess Huff, the Tribune's East Texas reporter, will talk with local healthcare leaders and government officials about how communities like Tyler are taking on health care challenges, how the Texas Legislature and state agencies are supporting these efforts, and how the future of health care will look in rural Texas.

Confirmed Speakers include:
- Kirk Calhoun, MD, president of UT Tyler and board chair of UT Health East Texas
- Kristina Childress, senior public health official, and administrator of Angelina County and Cities Health District
