On Saturday, our group of 46 set off to Valley Forge National Historical Park!
We started the afternoon gathered together for a Wawa hoagie lunch at the JCHAI Education Center in Bryn Mawr before riding the bus to Valley Forge. We arrived at the Visitor Center and had time to explore the educational exhibits where we saw historic weapons, clothing, & cookware used during the winter encampment and we saw a life-size model of George Washington on horseback. One of our members, Peter, fit right in - he came fully dressed in his Revolutionary War uniform…well done, Peter!
Our trip continued back on the bus joined by Janice, a professional tour guide and former Park Ranger. As we drove around the park grounds, Janice led an engaging tour teaching us about the history of Revolutionary War, what life was like for soldiers and the people who supported them, and about the importance of the encampment at Valley Forge. Janice was very pleasantly surprised by the impressive historic knowledge of many of our members as she asked questions during our bus tour!
During the tour, we made a few stops including at the recreated log huts where we had the opportunity to interact with historic costumed actors for a fascinating living-history experience. We learned about the harsh conditions the soldiers faced during their time at Valley Forge, the important roles that women played at the camp, and even about how bread was baked in ovens built into the ground.
Our bus tour continued driving past the National Memorial Arch and many of the other monuments throughout the park’s 3,500 acres. We had beautiful weather for our tour and the natural beauty of the park made for a great day!
Our tour ended back at the Visitor Center as we said goodbye to Janice and had the opportunity to browse and make purchases in the gift shop.
Saturday’s trip was intentional & mission-driven in promoting real-world learning and community inclusion, social connection & friendship, and physical activity in a beautiful, local, & historic setting.
The tour was a success and we’ll be looking to do similar trips like it in the future!
