Herb of the Day
Chickweed, Stellaria media
Part Used: Herb (flowers, leaves, stem)
Biochemical Actions: Demulcent, astringent, antiulcer (peptic), GI inflammation.
Traditional Uses: Internally as an antitussive, expectorant, demulcent to treat sore throat, coughing, peptic ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease and dyspepsia. Also indicated for rheumatism. Externally to treat boils, abscesses, rashes, psoriasis, eczema, itching, insect bites, and to promote healing of wounds.
Safety Issues: Class 1 – safe to use when used appropriately.
General Dosage:
3 to 6 ml/day of a fresh plant juice or equivalent in tablet or capsule form; 6 to 30 ml/day of a 1:5 dried herb tincture (25-50% alcohol; 25% alcohol:75% water) – should be made from recently dried herb.
