Waiver of the Debt with the VA:
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) does not forgive private consumer debts like credit cards, auto loans, or private medical bills. However, the VA does offer debt relief, waivers (forgiveness), and compromise offers for overpayments of VA benefits (such as disability, pension, or education) and VA healthcare copay bills.
Available VA Debt Relief Options:
Waiver: Ask the VA to completely forgive a VA-related debt because repayment causes financial hardship and the overpayment was not your fault.
Compromise Offer: Ask the VA to accept a lower, partial lump-sum amount as full payment for the debt.
Hardship Suspension: Request a temporary pause on repayments while dealing with financial distress.
Repayment Plan: Set up structured, smaller monthly payments over time.
How to Request a VA Waiver or Relief
Time Limit: You generally have 1 year from the date of your first debt letter or copay bill to request a waiver.
Required Form: Fill out a Financial Status Report (VA Form 5655) to demonstrate your income, assets, and monthly expenses.
Submission: The fastest way to apply is online through the official VA Debt Management Portal. You can also call the VA Debt Management Center directly at 800-827-0648
