Peripheral Nerve Stimulation: A Minimally Invasive Option for Chronic Pain

Chronic pain does not always have to mean more medications or major surgery. Peripheral nerve stimulation, or PNS, is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a small device to deliver gentle electrical pulses near a targeted nerve. These pulses help interrupt pain signals before they reach the brain, which may reduce pain and improve function.

PNS may be an option for certain patients with chronic nerve-related pain, post-surgical pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, back pain, or other focal pain conditions that have not improved with conservative treatment.

The goal is simple: less pain, better movement, and improved quality of life.

Spinal cord stimulator battery and X-ray placement photos from a recent SCS insertion performed by Dr. LeDoux.

A spinal cord stimulator (SCS) is an advanced therapy used to help manage chronic pain by delivering mild electrical signals to the nerves, changing the way pain signals are processed before they reach the brain. SCS may be an option for patients with conditions such as chronic back or leg pain, post-laminectomy syndrome, failed back surgery syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), peripheral neuropathic pain, and certain cases of radicular pain that have not responded well to more conservative treatment.

The goal is not just to reduce pain, but to help improve function, sleep, activity level, and overall quality of life. Every patient is different, which is why a thorough evaluation is so important. If you have been living with chronic pain and wondering whether a spinal cord stimulator could be an option for you, Dr. LeDoux can help determine whether this treatment may fit your diagnosis, symptoms, and goals.
