The LVH ALS Foundation

The LVH ALS Foundation To change the lives of those directly and indirectly affected by ALS by raising funds and awareness to help find a cure. He passed peacefully at home.

The LVH ALS Foundation was formed with and in memory of Larry Vance Hughes. Larry Vance Hughes was an amazing husband, son, father, friend, Christian, businessman…and so much more. He grew up in Burnsville, North Carolina with his parents and two older brothers. Larry attended Western Carolina University and then entered the accounting field, where he built a successful 40-year career, retiring in

2013, as the Managing Partner of Healthcare at Dixon Hughes Goodman. Well known and well loved in his field, Larry truly left a legacy. If you knew Larry, you knew that retirement didn’t slow him down. He pursued his passion of knowledge and love of God, by embarking on a Masters of Arts in Practical Theology at Pfeiffer University. As well, he was able to serve and give back to the community by taking on a new position in the office of the COO at Samaritan’s Purse. Surrounded by his family and friends, Larry was diagnosed with ALS in the fall of 2013. Soon after, they joined him in his battle against ALS knowing that while Larry’s life would sadly be cut short, their efforts might someday save another family member or loved one. Larry’s family and friends believed that by forming The LVH ALS Foundation, not only would it honor Larry, but it would provide hope to future generations through its crucial fundraising efforts to fight this disease. The passion and drive Larry had – and his tireless efforts to give his time to so many – have impacted all involved in the work of the foundation that bears his name. Larry was never one to ask for sympathy and through his strong faith, accepted his fate with the knowledge that God would use him for a greater good. With heavy hearts, Larry’s family and friends said goodbye to the man they loved on November 12, 2014. Larry is survived by his wonderful wife of 21 years, Kim; son Johnathan and wife Tammy; daughter Sarah and husband Ashley; two stepsons, Josh and wife Ashley and Brett and wife Wendy; and six grandchildren who all brought him great joy. Our purpose is simple: change the lives of those who are directly and indirectly affected by ALS. The mission of the LVH Foundation is to provide funding to endow a professorship of ALS at Duke University – not only to help those today with ALS, but more importantly to find a cure for ALS in the future. The LVH ALS Foundation was established in 2014 by the family of the late Larry Vance Hughes. It quickly became one of the largest most successful ALS foundations within North Carolina. Through a partnership with Duke University, the foundation is committed to raising funds and awareness to find a cure for ALS. Under the leadership of Dr. Richard Bedlack, Duke University in Durham, NC has one of the largest and most comprehensive ALS Clinics in the world. The professorship we seek to establish would allow Dr. Bedlack to focus solely on ALS patient care, research and advocacy, and would be one of only four in the country. ALS (Amytropic Lateral Schlerosis) is a degenerative disease that leads to progressive weakness and ultimately death. To date, there is no cure for ALS, but we do have HOPE. The foundation accepts donations in any amount and can process debit, prepaid gift cards, and all major credit cards through PayPal at [email protected]. The foundation also accepts stock donations and checks sent to us via mail. LVH ALS FoundationMake checks payable to:

The Legend (and Slight Humbling) of the Hoge Twins

Now let’s address the photo above.

Yes, that’s Thing 1 and Thing 2 — also known as the Hoge Twins.

As fraternal twins, we’ve essentially been preparing for three-legged races our entire lives. Some kids played soccer. Others ran track.

Apparently we were unknowingly training for synchronized athletic dominance.

In 2016, we hosted an LVH ALS Foundation fundraiser that included a three-legged race. Naturally, we entered the competition ourselves. Given our lifetime of preparation, we felt extremely confident.

So confident, in fact, that we decided to give every other team a head start.

That decision turned out to be… a mistake.

Our arrogance got the best of us and we finished second place.

For the past 10 years, that result has been studied, analyzed, and debated extensively in the Hoge household.

The conclusion is simple:

Redemption is required.

Redemption Tour

This year, the Hoge Twins Redemption Tour officially begins.

We are entering the race again and are prepared to take on all challengers. If you and your partner believe you have what it takes to defeat the twins, we welcome the challenge.

Just understand that the head start policy has been permanently eliminated.

Join Us and Support the Cause

While the competition will be fierce, the real reason we’re here is much bigger.

This event honors Larry Hughes, supports Mailey and her family, and continues the mission of the LVH ALS Foundation to fight ALS and support families facing this disease.

It has also been a few years since we hosted a formal fundraiser for the foundation, which makes this event especially meaningful.

So here’s the challenge:

• Sign up for the race
• Donate to support ALS research
• Help us raise as much money as possible

Come compete.
Come laugh.
Come support a cause that matters.

And if you think you can stop the Hoge Twins Redemption Tour, we encourage you to try.

Just remember:

Thing 1 and Thing 2 have been training for this since elementary school.

Our connection to ALS is deeply personal. In 2014 we lost our stepdad, Larry Vance Hughes, to ALS. After his passing, our family created the LVH ALS Foundation to honor his legacy and support ALS research and families battling this disease.

Gone but never forgotten…. It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since Larry V. Hughes aka Pop Pop passed away. His legacy of giving and helping others continues thru the work of the LVH ALS Foundation. 10 years later not many people talk about what he accomplished in his professional life even though it was pretty an impressive career. People remember what he did for them, what he did for others and how much he loved his family and community. He was a mentor too many and helped countless people without ever wanting or expecting recognition in return.

Nobody will remember the possessions you accumulate but people will remember your legacy of giving, helping others and whether you left the world in a better place.

A lot has happened over the past 10 years: Grandkids are in college and attending High School. My golf game is worse than it was 10 years ago- I still haven’t won a golf tournament since winning the Member/Member at BRCC with a man battling ALS…. The family is as close as it’s ever been. We still celebrate and remember the life of Larry Vance Hughes on a daily basis. Cheers to you in Heaven. Hoping you celebrate each day with a Cigar, a glass of Scotch after making birdies on the course.

THEY ARE HERE! We commissioned Tudor to do 30 custom watches for ALS. All money is getting donated to DUKE ALS for the Stewart, Hughes Wendt fund for ALS research. As we all know Larry got the Celtic Trinity Cross tattooed on his arm while we were in Ireland so I thought it was fitting to add that to the watch. The timing snuck up on me and I committed to 30 for the foundation. If you are interested let me know as they will be ready by Christmas and I need to get them names . Price is $4,000 per watch which is what they sell for not including the customization. Because of the watch market I need to connect you straight with the jeweler as Tudor is worried about reselling because of the limited run of 100- total we did as a group. We did 30 for the LVH ALS Foundation with the Celtic Cross. It’s a one time deal and I need to know by end of week if you have any interest. Fits Men and Women. Direct message me or respond in the comments. - Brett
