In some of my training I was taught about a tool called the Expression Session. I’ve used to help addicts through the reconciliation part of the 12 step process. I haven’t used it often for myself. Basically it goes like this… you invite someone from your past into your headspace and have a conversation that you’ve put off or that it’s too late to have. It can be over an unresolved issue or anything else that comes to mind. I do not EVER recommend having these conversations in person. Once you feel like the person is near or you can visualize them, start sharing your thoughts. Once you’ve done that, ask them for theirs. As feelings come up, I visualize putting them in a trash bag so conversation can remain open. When it feels like things are resolved as much as they can be at the time ask for God to come in and share His thoughts. Then see if you/your emotional energy can forgive the other person, God, and yourself for the situation that was created and vice versa.
A few weeks ago, I started this process with someone from my own past and didn’t realize until a few days ago that I hadn’t finished the process. Things still felt weird when I thought about the situation. Yesterday I had some time to myself driving between events and I chose to use the time to revisit the process. I realized that although I felt liked I’d resolved things with that individual I hadn’t invited God in to get his take on things. The things God shared put everything in a whole new light! I could see that there really was a plan that I wasn’t privy to and that my misunderstand and doubt has caused quite a bit of grief in my life. I am able to forgive and let go of the lingering questions I had about that situation and forgive those involved.
Life is crazy! Misunderstanding or thinking I know better can make it even crazier!!
