“Every storm runs out of rain.” — Maya Angelou

If you're in Hawaiʻi, you already know — it has not stopped raining. Between the storms and the power outages, it's been a lot.

Got us thinking about the other kind of storm too. The stress, the grief, the hard season you can't see the end of yet.

One thing worth remembering: emotions are temporary, even the uncomfortable ones. They arrive, they build, and eventually they change — even when it doesn't feel that way in the moment.

A few things that can help while you're in it: stepping away and letting yourself rest, reaching out to your people instead of carrying it alone, and letting yourself actually feel what you're feeling instead of rushing to fix it.

You don't have to find the sunshine while you're still standing in the rain. Sometimes resilience just means taking care of yourself until the weather changes.

This week's Mental Health Minute — for anyone in a rainy season right now. However you're doing, we're glad you're here.

People can spend years thinking about going to therapy before they actually make the call.

Then they finally do it.

They fill out the paperwork. Tell a stranger things they may have never said out loud. Come back for another appointment.

And somewhere in those first few sessions, hopefully there’s a moment where they think:

“Ah. This is why I came to therapy.”

Maybe they feel understood for the first time.

Maybe something finally makes sense.

Maybe they simply feel a little less alone.

I think about that a lot from the provider side.

How do we make those first few sessions meaningful enough that someone who spent three years building up the courage to reach out feels glad they did?

Not because therapy needs to produce an instant breakthrough.

But because that early sense of connection and possibility matters.

There was a time in my life when getting a flat tire wasn't just annoying.

It was a financial catastrophe.

I remember thinking, “Holy sh*t. How am I going to get to work?”

Thankfully, my dad knew where to get a decent used tire for about $50. That's how I got through a lot of things back then. Figure it out. Float until the next paycheck. Hope nothing else goes wrong. 😂

You don't want to run your business that way either.

Because eventually, something unexpected WILL happen.

That's really all a cash reserve is.

Rainy day money for your business.

Enough breathing room that a flat tire can just be a flat tire.

We're a for-profit practice but if you looked at how we actually operate, it looks a lot more like a community health center. One of the earliest decisions we made at IMUA was that we didn't want to build a traditional private practice.

We wanted something that felt more like a community health center.

That sounds nice as a mission statement. 😂

In practice, it means making some decisions that aren't necessarily the easiest way to run a business.

We take all the QUEST (Medicaid) plans. We work with people who don't have insurance when we can. We're a training ground for clinicians coming into the field.

And I completely understand why a solo provider might choose differently. Healthcare administration is a real burden, especially when you're trying to do everything yourself.

But if access was going to be part of our mission, we knew we'd have to build the infrastructure to actually support it.

It's a lot of work.

It's also the kind of work we wanted to do.

This description of high-functioning anxiety had me laughing. 😂

You know the person.

They've got lists on lists. They're organizing the group chat. They sent the Doodle poll three months early. They've already followed up with everyone who didn't respond.

And everyone else is thinking, “They're so thoughtful!”

They ARE thoughtful.

They might also be trying really hard to make sure absolutely everything—and everyone—is going to be okay.

That's what makes this tricky. From the outside, anxiety can sometimes look like being extremely capable, prepared, detail-oriented, and responsible.

Those aren't bad qualities.

You just can't always tell what someone's internal experience is from how well they appear to have everything together.

Something we've learned coordinating intakes: most people would rather come in sooner, even if the time isn't perfect, than wait weeks for the ideal appointment.

So when someone wants an afternoon telehealth session and all we have is a morning opening, we offer both options — tomorrow's imperfect slot and next week's perfect one.

Many time, they choose tomorrow. Getting people care sooner matters more than getting it perfect. 💙

IMUA really started with one question.

My partner was already in private practice, helping about 50 people. She was happy doing what she was doing and had zero interest in building a group practice.

So I asked her:

**“What if we could help 10x more people together?”**

That got her attention.

Then I told her I'd handle the business, operations, and admin so she could focus on the clinical work.

That probably helped too. 😂

We didn't start IMUA because we dreamed about building a big company.

We started because we realized that if we combined what each of us did best, we could help a whole lot more people.

And honestly, that idea still drives what we're building today.

This one from our TikTok Live made me laugh. 😂

“If you haven't messaged me in the last 48–72 hours, you basically don't exist to me anymore.”

Tasha shares what this can look like for her with ADHD—including making plans with someone, not hearing from them for a few days, and basically removing the plans (and the person 😂) from her brain.

Then he texts the morning of like, “Are we still on?”

And her brain has to reload the whole situation. 😂

Sometimes what looks like being forgetful or flaky from the outside can feel very different for the person experiencing it.

Anyone with ADHD relate to this one? 💛

The field needs you. That's not a recruiting slogan — it's just math.

If you added up every licensed provider, every student in training, everyone who could pick up extra hours, there still wouldn't be enough people to meet the need in our community.

That's not a knock on the people already doing this work. It's the honest scope of the gap, and why we need more people willing to step into it. 🌱

School's back in session, and so is the traffic. 🚗

If your brain feels like it's sprinting through the day — what's next, where do I need to be, what did I forget — that's cognitive load. And when we're stuck in task-management mode, we can get so busy getting through the day that we forget to actually experience it.

The fix isn't a magically empty calendar. It's small pauses inside the busy life you already have: two minutes to actually enjoy your coffee, three slow breaths between tasks, phone down for a few minutes with someone you love.
