Empathy is not the same as sympathy. Sympathy is when we feel bad for a person. Empathy starts with listening, really hearing what others feel. When we offer empathy to someone we quite literally feel for them. We speak in such a way as to validate their emotions, conveying compassion with our words.
Empathy is actively listening. We can help others with loneliness, fear, and shame, having concern for their wellbeing both mentally and physically. We can bless someone with our words of compassion, sharing in their emotions and helping them heal.
Can you think of a person in your life that you can truly share you’re raw, honest feelings with? What a blessing! I imagine there is someone in your world that needs your listening, caring heart. Your best is enough.
You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know when it will be too late. Ralph Waldo Emerson
