September is National Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Awareness Month!❤️

At Heart South Cardiovascular Group, PC we want our patients and community to understand AFib, recognize the possible signs and know why it’s important to talk with your healthcare provider about changes in your heart rhythm.

What is AFib?
Atrial fibrillation, or AFib, is the most common type of irregular heartbeat. During AFib, the upper chambers of the heart beat irregularly and out of sync with the lower chambers.

⚠️ **Why does AFib matter?**
AFib can cause blood to pool in the heart, which may allow blood clots to form. If a clot travels to the brain, it can cause a stroke. According to the American Heart Association, people with untreated AFib may have **up to 5 times greater risk of stroke** than people without AFib.

Know the possible signs of AFib:

❤️ A rapid or irregular heartbeat
💓 Fluttering or “thumping” in the chest
😴 Fatigue or weakness
😵 Dizziness or lightheadedness
😫Shortness of breath

It’s also important to know that **some people with AFib have no symptoms at all.** AFib may sometimes be discovered during a routine exam.

The good news is that AFib can be managed. Treatment may include medications, procedures and heart-healthy lifestyle changes. Your healthcare provider can help determine the treatment plan that is right for you.

This September, take a moment to **Know Your Rhythm. Know Your Risk.** ❤️

If you have noticed changes in your heartbeat or have concerns about your heart health, talk with your healthcare provider.
