The Interventional Initiative

The Interventional Initiative But what if you were ill but did know your treatment options? In fact, most people have never heard of MIIPs, even if one could save their life.

the II is a not-for-profit 501c3 organization with a mission of improving public awareness of minimally invasive, image-guided procedures through the production of multimedia health resources There are minimally invasive, image-guided procedures (MIIPs) to treat blocked blood vessels, cancer, strokes, aneurysms, bleeding, infertility, and so much more. Patients empowered to make informed healthcar

e decisions have better outcomes. Increased public awareness about MIIPs will lead to

1) more informed healthcare choices,
2) better access to MIIPs,
3) better healthcare outcomes,
4) overall healthcare cost savings as MIIPs are better utilized,
5) greater allocation of healthcare resources to support MIIPs, and
6) more funding of research and innovation to advance MIIPs.

Uterine fibroids, there’s a MIIP for that 💡

April is National Minority Health Month, and in tackling healthcare disparities, awareness matters.

Fibroids disproportionately affect women of color, often causing severe symptoms and impacting quality of life.

✨ Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) offers a minimally invasive alternative to surgery.

✔️ No large incisions
✔️ Faster recovery
✔️ Uterus-sparing

Better awareness leads to personalized choices and better healthcare.

Knee pain, there’s a MIIP for that 🦴💥

Spring is here, which means more time outside, more walks, more movement, more life.

But if knee pain from osteoarthritis is holding you back, it might be time to explore your options.

There’s more than one minimally invasive path forward:

➡️ Image-guided joint injections can deliver targeted medication right where it’s needed for relief
➡️ Genicular Artery Embolization (G*E) helps reduce inflammation by targeting the blood flow contributing to knee pain

✔️ No major surgery
✔️ Minimally invasive options
✔️ Get back to doing what you love

This spring, don’t sit on the sidelines.

What is a DVT?🩸

A Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot in a vein, typically in your leg or your arm. This is a serious condition that, if untreated, could lead to the clot breaking and going somewhere else in your body and blocking blood flow, like your lungs, which is then called a "pulmonary embolism."

There are medications that help to treat these blood clots, but sometimes, depending on where the clot is or how big it is, as well as other factors, medications alone are not enough. Fortunately, there’s a MIIP for that!

Minimally invasive treatments can:

⚡ Break up clots quickly
⚡ Restore blood flow
⚡ Reduce long-term complications

Kidney cancer? There’s a MIIP for that! 💥🧊

March is National Kidney Cancer Awareness Month. For some kidney tumors, treatment doesn’t mean losing your kidney. Tumor ablation is a minimally invasive image-guided procedure using heat or cold to destroy cancer cells while preserving healthy tissue.

✔️ Minimally invasive
✔️ Kidney-sparing
✔️ Faster recovery

If you could have a medical treatment with less pain and faster recovery… wouldn’t you want to know about it?

Interventional radiology is a medical specialty that does just that by offering minimally invasive, image-guided procedures (MIIPs), alternatives to many open surgeries. But many people don’t know those are an option. We strive to change that!

The Power of MIIPs Through Patient Stories: Saving a Shattered Kidney

A 17-year-old skateboarder wiped out hard. He shattered his kidney and was bleeding badly. Instead of surgery, the trauma team called Interventional Radiology. We stopped the bleeding by plugging the damaged blood vessel from the inside. Days later, he was walking. Weeks later, he crossed the stage at graduation—kidney saved, future intact.

Without a Scalpel Day honors how far patient care has come.

Thanks to early innovators like Dr. Charles Dotter, who performed the first minimally invasive image-guided procedure (MIIP) on this day in 1964 spearheading the field of Interventional Radiology, to the subsequent years and ongoing evolution of MIIPs, many conditions that once required surgery can now be treated through a tiny entry point, guided by imaging.

Less risk. Faster recovery. Better outcomes. Here’s to the history of Interventional Radiology and MIIPs, and the lives they continue to change.

The Power of MIIPs Through Patient Stories: A Goiter Gone, Life Back on Track

A 42-year-old mom with a large thyroid nodule felt pressure in her throat and could see the lump in the mirror. She didn’t want surgery. Instead, we performed an ablation—shrinking the nodule through a pinhole in her skin. She left with a bandaid and returned to work and family life, breathing and speaking with ease again.
