Cancer is a multifactorial disease, meaning it develops from a combination of many factors, not one single cause. Mutations can happen in the body without becoming cancer, but cancer may develop when several mutations build up over time and affect cell growth.

Cancer has existed for thousands of years and is sadly common in both humans and dogs. While factors like diet, pesticides, breed risk, secondhand smoke, or stress may influence overall risk, they do not mean you caused your dog’s cancer.

Coconut oil is often discussed as a supportive addition to a dog’s wellness routine because it contains medium-chain triglycerides, or MCTs, which can provide quick energy for the body, brain, and liver.

Emerging research has also explored coconut oil and MCT-rich nutrition in relation to cancer support, quality of life, energy, appetite, and overall wellness. While canine-specific cancer studies are still limited, early animal, laboratory, and human research has created interest in coconut oil’s potential supportive role.

For dogs, coconut oil should be introduced slowly and thoughtfully. A commonly discussed amount is up to 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight, but every dog is different. Dogs with sensitive digestion, pancreatitis risk, or special medical needs should have veterinary guidance first.

Coconut oil is not a cancer treatment, but it may be one supportive tool to discuss with your veterinary team as part of a broader care plan.

Grain-free kibble has been linked to an increased risk of diet-associated heart disease in dogs, including dilated cardiomyopathy, or DCM.

Research has found that many of the diets most often associated with reported DCM cases contained peas, legumes, pulses, or potatoes as top ingredients. In one metabolomics study, grain-free diets showed higher levels of 88 compounds and lower levels of 23 compounds, with peas appearing most often as a source food tied to the increased compounds.

The concern is not simply “grain-free.” It is how these diets are formulated and how certain ingredient patterns may affect canine heart health.

Dogs are very good at hiding pain, so subtle changes may be the first sign that something is wrong.

Watch for limping, stiffness, trembling, panting, restlessness, whining, hiding, irritability, reduced appetite, or trouble getting comfortable. Some dogs may avoid stairs, hesitate to jump, sleep more than usual, or lose interest in walks, play, or family time.

You may also notice licking, guarding, or sensitivity around a painful area. Other dogs simply seem quieter, withdrawn, or “not themselves.”

If your dog has cancer, any new or worsening pain signs should be discussed with your veterinary team. Tracking comfort, mobility, appetite, sleep, and mood each day can help you spot patterns and share clearer updates with your vet. 🐾

Mammary cancer is one of the most common cancers seen in intact female dogs, and early detection can make a meaningful difference.

These tumors often appear as firm lumps along the mammary chain, especially near the rear legs. Some may become swollen, tender, ulcerated, or bleed. Risk is higher in unspayed females or dogs spayed later in life, and age, hormone exposure, and obesity may also play a role.

Pet parents can help by routinely feeling the full mammary chain, from the armpit to the inner thigh, and having any lump checked by a veterinarian.

Diagnosis may include a physical exam, biopsy, imaging, and staging. Surgery is often the main treatment, and smaller tumors may carry a better prognosis.

Awareness, early action, and a strong veterinary partnership matter. 🐾

When we hear the words "a**l sac cancer" or AGASACA, our hearts tend to skip a beat. It’s heavy, it’s scary, and it brings up so many questions about what comes next. 🐾

For many of our brave pups, surgery is the first line of defense. It’s often the most effective way to remove the primary tumor and help prevent the cancer from spreading further. But surgery isn't just a clinical step, it's a path toward comfort. By removing the source of discomfort, we’re often giving our dogs their "wiggle" back.

We know that the thought of a procedure can feel overwhelming. Please remember: Preparation is an act of love. Whether you’re organizing their recovery space with soft blankets or tracking their "Joys of Life" scale before and after, every step you take is a beautiful testament to the bond you share. 🕊️

You don’t have to navigate this alone. We’re here to walk beside you with evidence-based resources and a whole lot of heart.

How are you and your pup doing today? Drop a 🐾 in the comments so we can send you some extra love.
