Why did our ancestors fast on a regular basis? If you think about it, every major religion — from Christianity to Buddhism to Hinduism (to name a few) — holds the practice of fasting to be sacred and necessary. Is it just a way of showing reverence to the almighty or is there more to it than that? When we look beyond the religious texts, it becomes clear that this customary practice is not only good for our spirit, but is also highly beneficial for our health and longevity.

Fasting is an innate human behavior.

For our distant ancestors, 3 square meals a day were not always guaranteed. In many cases, the waking hours were spent hunting, gathering and trekking through the wilderness. There was often only one large meal eaten when food was available and the circumstances were safe. 7,000 years ago may seem like forever, but it’s a mere blink in time when it comes to the evolution of our human form.

I am sure you have heard all the information and hype about olive oil having massive health benefits. I am here to tell you that it is not hype at all, just mere fact. Here are a few of the benefits:

- Less aches, pains, and inflammation—Olive Oil contains a compound called oleocanthal which has an anti-inflammatory effect like ibuprofen but the good news is that there are no side effects. A study from Spain showed that men and women over the age of 55 who consumed olive oil for one month had decreased blood markers for inflammation, especially IFN-y and CXCL1.
- Less hunger—Since olive oil is a healthy fat, consuming olive oil stops hunger pangs. Since olive oil is a type of fat, it would seem that it would cause weight gain. On the contrary; statistics show people losing weight the first two weeks of consuming olive oil.

When it comes to skincare products, there’s a long list of ingredients you’ll commonly see on big brand and many “poser organic” skin products that you’ll want to avoid at all costs.

For both effectiveness and safety, it is highly recommended that you only use pure USDA Certified Organic skin products. We put together a list of 6 of the "worst-of-the-worst" offender ingredients to be sure and watch out for:

- Anything ending in PARABEN - Parabens wreak havoc with hormones, can increase fat storage in your body (especially in women) and can create problems at the cellular level which can cause you many major health problems.
- Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids (Lactic Acid and Glycolic Acid) - Using products that contain these acids may double the UV-induced cellular damage that occurs in your skin, which will actually accelerate the appearance of skin aging, not prevent it.

Dandelion (scientifically known as Taraxacum officinale) is a perennial herb known for its bright yellow color. In addition to its use in tea, dandelion root extract has been used in soft drinks, soup, wine, and other recipes for its sweet and smoky taste. Some benefits of dandelion tea include its ability to promote gut health and reduce inflammation. Dandelion tea has been consumed throughout history for its health benefits and as an alternative to caffeinated coffee, including in China, India, and Native American communities.

- Reduces Inflammation

Several antioxidants and other components in dandelion tea have anti-inflammatory properties.

Day 28 - Now What?
I woke up the morning after my final radiation treatment and felt very strange. I was so used to having to be at the clinic every single day, so it was odd to think I didn't have to go anymore. Still moving very slowly, I was extraordinarily grateful to think that I didn't have to start the long, arduous process of pulling myself together to go to the clinic. It felt so good to be able to just relax; it was very liberating and felt so freeing. I still had a long way to go to get my body back into some sort of shape and to regain my strength, especially in my legs. I was determined to work my way back slowly but surely and to get back to my normal work routine.

If you want to live a long, healthy life, fiber is a critical nutrient. It’s important to eat plenty of it every day, yet fiber is an often underestimated and overlooked nutrient. Additionally, most people eating the modern industrialized diet aren’t getting nearly enough of it. Could your diet be lacking fiber? Probably so as only 6% of Americans get the recommended amount of fiber. And fewer than 1 out of 10 adults in the UK meets adequate fiber intake. In places where traditional diets are still eaten, like many of the Blue Zones that are home to some of the planet’s longest living people, eating fiber-rich foods is par for the course. In fact, it may very well be that fiber is a major contributing factor to the longevity of Blue Zone residents.

If you want to live a long, healthy life, fiber is a critical nutrient. It’s important to eat plenty of it every day, yet fiber is an often underestimated and overlooked nutrient.

Triphala is an Ayurvedic remedy made of dried fruit from the alma, bibhitaki, and haritaki plants. Triphala, meaning "three fruits," is a traditional Ayurvedic herbal medicine made of the dried fruit of three different Indian plants: alma (Emblica officinalis), bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), and haritaki (Terminalia chebula). The mixture has been used for thousands of years and is thought to help people live longer and healthier lives.

Benefits of Triphala

Though more research is needed, triphala has been described as having antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-stress, pain-relieving, purifying, and rejuvenating properties.

Improves Digestion and Gut Health

Triphala may help with digestion and how well your body absorbs and breaks down food. It acts as a prebiotic, raising the "good" bacteria and reducing the "bad" bacteria in your mouth and gut.

Sulforaphane is a compound that forms when cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower come into contact with certain proteins in your body or when they are otherwise "damaged," such as when they're chopped, cooked, or chewed. Sulforaphane starts as a substance called glucoraphanin. An enzyme called myrosinase turns it into sulforaphane. While this sulfur-rich chemical is generated when you prepare and eat cruciferous vegetables, it’s also available as a supplement. Sulforaphane is best known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. These effects may help prevent cancer and cognitive decline, among other health benefits, though more research is needed.

Epsom salt is not really a salt at all, it's a mineral compound comprised of magnesium and sulfate and gets its named from a saline spring at Epsom in Surrey, England. Epsom salt has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for a number of ailments, and also has many beauty, gardening and household uses.

Because both magnesium and sulfate are readily absorbed into the skin, it makes their health benefits readily accessible. Over 325 enzymes in the body are regulated by magnesium, which also helps reduce inflammation, alleviates hardening of the arteries and improves muscle and nerve function. Sulfates improve the rate at which nutrients are absorbed and help to flush out toxins.

Here are 17 of our favorite uses for this versatile compound – we hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

- Soothe sore muscles

An Epsom salt bath is a great way to soothe sore muscles, cramps, bruises and joint pain. Because of this, it is a great after-workout soak.
