About Wings

Mission Statement
The mission of Wings is to enhance the quality of life for American Indian youth. In partnership with Native communities, Wings uses running as a catalyst to empower American Indian and Alaskan Native youth to take pride in themselves and their cultural identity, leading to increased self esteem, health and wellness, leadership and hope, balance and harmony. Measurement
A Wings survey conducted in 2000, showed a 99% high school graduation rate, with 94% of our participants going on to college. Results of the survey indicated that overall, WOA participants are attaining a higher level of education, have lower incidences of arrests, less use of alcohol and illegal drugs, are having their first child a year or two later than average, and they are more physically active and maintaining healthier lives than their same-age peers in the larger American Indian and general populations. Our Programs
Wings reaches Indian children not only through grassroots programs in Indian communities in partnership with private sector including foundations, corporations and individual donors. After twenty-three years of youth development services, Wings has served over twenty three thousand young men and women. Included in Wings programming is the National Cross Country Championship program designed to elevate competitive all Native teams and individual runners. Since first participating the National Junior Cross Country Championships in 1988, the Wings-sponsored teams have earned over twenty national championship titles. Additionally, Wings provides speakers, clinicians and other assistance to wellness programs, conferences, athletic banquets, fairs, races, et al. Wings also distributes Spiked/Waffle running shoes to our Native youths and Track-in-the-Box units to Indian running clubs, walking and wellness programs. Our Staff

Wings National Team 2026 applications are officially OPEN! 🎉

We’re looking for Native high school runners from across the country who are ready to take on the postseason, compete at a high level, and represent their communities and Indian Country with Wings of America.

Athletes will qualify primarily through Nike Cross Regionals (NXR), with selected runners representing the Wings National Team at the New Balance RunningLane Cross Country Championships in Huntsville, Alabama on December 5, 2026!

⏱️ Girls: Sub-21:15 5K

Athletes who meet the qualifying standard may also apply for NXR race registration and/or travel assistance from Wings.

Remembrance Run 6
August 15-16, 2026

Since Kutoven Stevens was on a Wings National Team in 2022, we’ve been fully-aware of his tenacious spirit and the unyielding kindness of his family.

Our organization is thrilled to have teamed up with Remaining Native Documentary on the impact campaign for the documentary that profiles Ku’s hunt for running prowess alongside his family’s conception of the “Remembrance Run”. As the film is shown across Indian Country, we intend to couple screenings with youth running camps and/or prayer runs. We know connections made at these events can lead to sustained running programs for Native youth.

With all this in mind, it only seemed right that a Wings representative finally participate in the 6th Remembrance Run (4th open to the public).

This photo shows Remembrance Run Journeyers on the 5th leg of Day 2 of the run on Washoe Tribal Lands adjacent to Stewart Indian School.

One of the Wings staffs present in the circle of Journeyers assembled before the start of the run. The run begins at the homelands of the Yerington Paiute Tribe. The Tribe graciously hosted runners to camp in the grassy & shady park adjacent to Tribal admin buildings and across the road from Ku’s home.

Journeyers were provided a great pasta dinner, the opportunity to screen print Remembrance Run memorabilia, and a screening of the “Remaining Native”- al fresco. Fresco it was, indeed.

The start of the 50 mile journey from Yerington Paiute Tribe’s Campbell Ranch up and over Sunrise Pass to the old Stewart Indian School on Washoe Tribal Lands.

Less than a mile from the start, the run left the pavement and remained on dirt roads/trails until the very last miles of the last leg. From the outset, it was a euphoric feeling to be moving through the cool early-morning desert with a group of mostly strangers you could sense were about to become family.

Wings was honored to host the 2nd rest stop on day 1, near mile-10. We were just one of 9 groups to host rest stops to help Journeyers refuel and regroup. The Remembrance Run is unique because it allows runners/walkers to b

NEWCOMB CAMP 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Our time in Newcomb was another great stop on this summer's camp tour!

Over two days, youth from the community joined us for running, fitness activities, team games, and making it another memorable camp with Wings of America.

This camp also marked the conclusion of our summer partnership with the Navajo Nation Department of Health. We are incredibly grateful for their support and collaboration throughout the summer. Their partnership helped us bring Running & Fitness Camps to communities across the Navajo Nation and provided countless opportunities for Native youth to stay active, build confidence, and connect with one another.

Thank you to everyone in Newcomb for welcoming us into your community, and thank you to the Navajo Nation Department of Health for helping make this summer possible. We look forward to continuing our summer camp season and finishing strong!

GANADO CAMP @ GANADO HIGH SCHOOL 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Our time in Ganado was another unforgettable stop on this summer's camp tour!

Over two days, youth from the community joined us for running, fitness activities, team games, and creating an encouraging and energetic environment for everyone involved.

We were also honored to welcome Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren back for another visit. During his time at camp, he joined in the fun by racing a few of our campers—and even some of our facilitators!

The visit also included a special recognition for two of our friends of Wings, Hosava Kretzmann and Ford Washburn, who were presented with Certificates of Recognition and Pendleton blankets for being outstanding role models and for their continued dedication to Native youth.

Thank you to Ganado High School, our community partners, and everyone who helped make this camp such a success. We always enjoy our time in Ganado and look forward to seeing you again next summer!

SAN FELIPE PUEBLO CAMP 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Our East Team spent two great days in San Felipe Pueblo for another Wings Running & Fitness Camp!

Camp was held outside on the soccer field, and while the summer heat was definitely with us, it didn't stop our participants or facilitators from staying active, encouraging one another, and having a great time.

A heartfelt thank you to San Felipe Pueblo and the Health & Wellness Department for welcoming Wings of America into your community and helping make this camp possible. We truly appreciate your partnership and hospitality, and we look forward to coming back in the future!

CHINLE CAMP @ CHINLE HIGH SCHOOL 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Our time in Chinle is always one of the highlights of the summer.

This year's camp was one of our largest, with an incredible turnout from the community. Chinle is home to several of our current and former Wings facilitators, so coming back each year truly feels like coming home. We're always grateful for the warm welcome and support from the community.

We were also honored to welcome Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren back for another visit. During his time at camp, he presented every one of our Summer Facilitators with a Certificate of Recognition in appreciation of their hard work, leadership, and dedication to serving Native youth throughout the summer.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, supported our camp, and helped make these two days such a success. We can't wait to be back in Chinle again!

Meet our 2026 Summer Facilitator, Ronelle!

Ronelle is the youngest member of our 2026 summer facilitator team, and this is her first summer with Wings! She is from Crownpoint, New Mexico, and will be a junior at Crownpoint High School this fall. Throughout her first summer, Ronelle has discovered the importance of perspective and is passionate about creating a positive, supportive environment where every camper feels encouraged to grow and believe in themselves.

Thank you for bringing your enthusiasm, kindness, and positive energy to Wings this summer, Ronelle! We're excited to see all that you'll continue to accomplish.
