FRIDAY FIVE: 5 things New Mexico NPs should know about Medication Aides.
The New Mexico Board of Nursing updated 16.12.5 NMAC, Medication Aides, effective July 31, 2026. If Medication Aides are part of your practice setting, now is a good time to review the updated rule.
1. Know which Medication Aide role/certification applies in your setting.
2. Know what functions the Medication Aide is authorized to perform.
3. Know which functions are prohibited or outside the Medication Aide role.
4. Understand the RN supervision/direction and delegation requirements that apply.
5. Make sure your organization’s policies, training, and competency processes reflect the current BON rule.
NPs who work with MAs, UAPs, or Medication Aides should be clear about the differences between these roles and what each may legally and safely do.
Review the current Medication Aide information and 16.12.5 NMAC through the New Mexico Board of Nursing.
