The USDA has confirmed New Mexico’s first case of New World screwworm in a dog from Lea County. New World screwworm is a flesh-eating parasite that can affect livestock, pets, wildlife, and, in rare cases, humans. Animal owners are encouraged to regularly check animals for wounds or unusual infestations and report concerns to their veterinarian immediately. Early detection is critical to preventing spread and protecting animal health.
