Anything is paws-ible when students learn how dogs can help our community members! 🐾

Assistance Dogs of the West (ADW) presented to our Undergraduate Health Sciences Enrichment Program (UHSEP) students this week.

ADW places service dogs with client recipients requiring individual and family support for mobility impairments, autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities, seizure disorders, type 1 diabetes, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders and progressive diseases, among others.

Thank you to ADW for introducing our students to your stellar work serving clients and promoting health care access through these amazing dogs!

UNM Health Sciences, El Centro de la Raza, and ENLACE New Mexico are hosting the 2026 Dennis Chavez New Mexico Lorenzo de Zavala (LDZ) Youth Legislative Session at the University of New Mexico and the New Mexico State Capitol this week in partnership with the National Hispanic Institute (NHI). There are 120 high school students, 25 junior and senior counselors, and five staff involved for 150 participants this summer. Senator Michael Padilla is the lead legislative sponsor for this leadership development initiative over the past five years.

The Long Determination is a powerful documentary that traces the history of LGBTQ+ service members in the U.S. military, highlighting the recurring struggles and hard-won successes they faced in their fight to serve openly and with dignity.
From the civil rights struggles beginning in World War II to today’s battles to protect transgender service members and others still fighting for acceptance, the documentary sheds light on the quiet heroism of those who served while hiding their identities. Film viewers will witness the firsthand accounts of service under the weight of secrecy, yet with unmatched courage and professionalism.

The panel discussion will have four members of the documentary production staff: Steve Loomis, Ronald Freeny, Jose Rodriguez, and Adan Garcia of Determined Equality Productions, Inc.

Attendees can also visit campus earlier to be a part of the Pride Picnic beginning at 11am if you’d like to grab a bite before the movie and panel! Free food will be right outside of the Domenici Auditorium area, and food can be taken inside the auditorium.

This is definitely the season of completion and of new beginnings in our office! 👏

Throughout May, we honored our Undergraduate Student Scholars and Health Professions Student Scholars at their end-of-year celebrations throughout the state. Both of these programs improve the recruitment, mentorship, training, and retention of underrepresented undergraduate and professional students in New Mexico with a commitment to health equity, and they are funded in part by the New Mexico Workforce Diversity Center of Excellence grant of HRSA.

Jenn Tjung finished her third year of the Undergraduate Student Scholars Program, successfully completing the entire program term. She is a rising senior at UNM pursuing a dual degree in Biochemistry and Psychology, and her current healthcare career interest is to become a physician to practice within Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Jenn has also completed the Undergraduate Health Sciences Enrichment Program (UHSEP) and ClinEd programs offered through Communities to Careers.

We interviewed Jenn about her experience as an Undergraduate Student Scholar.

“The professional development, especially, plus the mentors I’ve been able to connect with in this program has really helped me a lot… All these connections have really led me to further develop and to become a more well-rounded pre-medical student. It’s also a great community.

I have a lot a peers in this program. That also helps with the scariness of every new semester. When you have new classes, I often recognize someone. A lot of networking, and building connections and relationships – that really has helped me.

It’s super worth it and the experience that you get out of it is incredibly amazing and valuable.”

Today is International Nurses Day! This year’s theme, instituted by the International Council of Nurses, is “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.”

We asked Lisa M. Taylor, Doctor of Nursing Practice, RN, FNP-BC, BC-ADM, C-DCES, MPH what empowers her to do the work that she does every day, and how she empowers the nurses around her. She is a clinician educator – assistant professor at the UNM College of Nursing (CON) in the Graduate/Professional programs, and also works as the the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the CON.

"What empowers me is working with learners from incredibly diverse backgrounds who will ultimately become the clinicians and nurse leaders our state needs, particularly in rural and frontier communities. Being a part of their journeys, that I hope will one day lead them back to the CON as faculty and preceptors, energizes me and it’s an honor to join them on their journeys."

Chinese American Women and the Making of Asian American Community

In June 1982, Vincent Chin, a 27-year old America-born Chinese engineer in Detroit, was murdered by a bat-wielding unemployed autoworker and his stepson in Highland Park, Michigan. This event introduced a series of events that have been credited with changing the political consciousness of Asian Americans at the time.

Although most stories about the murder of Vincent Chin mention his mother’s emotional pleas for justice, there has been minimal scholarly analysis of Lily Chin’s participation in the movement.

Dr. Karen Leong will provide three points of analysis: Motherhood, Legibility, and how Chinese American immigrant women’s challenges to the US legal system contributes to articulation of a specific Asian American Women's epistemology of reproductive rights and inclusion.

Students in our Dream Makers Health Careers program have been busy making their health career dreams come true! 💫
Throughout the year, we've welcomed middle and high school students from a myriad of areas across New Mexico to experience and explore health professions right on our beautiful campus. They've also connected with health care experts and medical students, and have become more grounded individuals through identity development and community engagement. Stay tuned as we celebrate these students during their Dream Makers graduations! 🎉

Hooray for promoting health professions! 🎉
Thank you to UNM Health Professions Symposium for having us at their 2026 Health Professions Symposium last Saturday! It was great to speak with high school and college students from all across the state about how they can get plugged in with health career pathway programming to support their educational and professional journeys. This event is such an amazing way for students to acquire so much information and insight to in turn explore and achieve their health career goals. We're already looking forward to next year!
