Last week, we welcomed our new Central Region cohort of Undergraduate Student Scholars to UNM North Campus! ⭐️

The Undergraduate Student Scholars Program (USSP) experience is packed with the tools and experiences to ensure students matriculate and graduate to their next level of education to ultimately become a health professional. This includes inter-professional educational experiences, health research, community engagement and service-learning opportunities, clinical shadowing, mentorship, and more. Students are also part of the program for up to three years!

Our office is so happy to congratulate Samata Alhassan for completing her Public Allies New Mexico term this year, culminating her work with our office!

For years, Samata has been a stellar asset to UNM Health Sciences Office for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion through student mentorship and leadership development, and since graduating from UNM’s nursing program in December 2025, she has entered the field with a focus on clinical excellence and community-centered care.

As a Hispanic-Serving Institution, UNM Health Sciences advances its efforts to expand excellence in Spanish language and culturally responsive health professional education. The summit highlights ongoing work to strengthen bilingual training and grow a diverse workforce that improves health care access and outcomes across New Mexico.

Overall Learning Objectives:
• Describe the institutional efforts at UNM Health Sciences, as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), to support and expand bilingual and multicultural education as a means of advancing excellence in health workforce.
• Discuss the current and future landscape of the bilingual health workforce and education in New Mexico.
• Discuss next steps to support the Spanish language education of future generations of bilingual health professionals in NM.

Congratulations to our New Mexican youth researchers of today! 💫

Our UNM STEMH Center for Outreach, Research and Education is proud to announce that three of the middle school participants of the STEM-H Center Central New Mexico Research Challenge are among 300 student finalists for the Society for Science's 2026 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge (JIC)! These top 300 middle school students were selected from a competitive pool of 1,997 applicants throughout the United States.

The Top 30 Thermo Fisher JIC finalists will be announced on Sept. 16 and will compete for more than $100,000 in awards, including the $25,000 Thermo Fisher Scientific ASCEND (Aspiring Scientists Cultivating Exciting New Discoveries) Award.

These Junior Innovators are addressing challenges, including designing a solar-powered air purifier, identifying the best materials to generate electric power from friction, using machine learning to predict asthma risk, and using artificial intelligence to improve aviation safety. Check out below the projects our innovative New Mexico finalists submitted for the competition:

Also, you still have time to donate books! A donation box is located in the HSLIC lobby, and you can also visit our office in building HSSB Suite 102.

In the Professional Achievement for Transdisciplinary Health (PATH) Emerging Scholars Program, high school juniors and seniors have a jam-packed week engaging with and being inspired by STEAM-H (science, technology, engineering, arts, math, and health) careers through programs and partnerships with local organizations. Anything is paws-ible when students learn how dogs can help our community members! 🐾

Assistance Dogs of the West (ADW) presented to our Undergraduate Health Sciences Enrichment Program (UHSEP) students this week.

ADW places service dogs with client recipients requiring individual and family support for mobility impairments, autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities, seizure disorders, type 1 diabetes, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders and progressive diseases, among others.

Thank you to ADW for introducing our students to your stellar work serving clients and promoting health care access through these amazing dogs!
