Can a supplement replace healthy eating?
It’s a question that comes up often.
If an orange contains vitamin C, why not just take a vitamin C supplement?
If fish contains omega-3 fats, why not take fish oil instead?
The answer comes down to something called food synergy.
Whole foods provide much more than individual nutrients. They contain combinations of vitamins, minerals, fiber, water, protein, healthy fats, and other compounds that interact in complex ways.
Research continues to suggest that the health benefits associated with foods often come from the entire package rather than a single isolated nutrient.
In Episode 245 of Real World Nutrition, I discuss:
✔ Whole foods versus supplements
✔ Food synergy and the matrix effect
✔ Fish versus fish oil
✔ Green powders and produce
✔ When supplements may be appropriate

Weight loss advice is everywhere. Unfortunately, so are weight loss myths.
Many popular recommendations sound simple:
“Don’t eat after 8 PM.”
“Cut out all white foods.”
“Eat low-fat.”
“Everyone should eat 1,200 calories.”
The reality is often much more nuanced.
Weight management is influenced by many factors, including eating habits, physical activity, sleep, stress, genetics, and overall dietary patterns. That’s one reason simple rules often fail to tell the whole story.
In my latest blog, I examine five common weight loss myths and explain what current nutrition science actually says about them.
Topics include:
✔ Meal timing
✔ Dietary fat
✔ Bread, pasta, and potatoes
✔ Food combining
✔ Low-calorie diets

Fresh, frozen, or canned?
When it comes to fruits and vegetables, many people assume fresh is always the best choice.
Fresh produce is wonderful, especially this time of year when many fruits and vegetables are in season. But fresh is not the only nutritious option.
Frozen fruits and vegetables are often processed shortly after harvest, helping preserve many nutrients. Canned fruits and vegetables can also be valuable additions to meals, especially when fresh produce is unavailable, expensive, or likely to spoil before it can be used.
One of my favorite reminders is this:
The best fruit or vegetable is often the one that gets eaten.
In my latest blog, I discuss why fruits and vegetables are in nearly every evidence-based eating pattern and address common myths about organic produce, pesticide residues, fruit sugar, root vegetables, nightshades, and more.

Can a supplement provide the same benefits as whole foods?

Many people assume that if a food contains a beneficial nutrient, taking that nutrient in a supplement should provide the same result. Nutrition research has shown that it is not always that simple.

In this episode, Shelley explores the concept of food synergy, also known as the matrix effect, and explains why whole foods often provide benefits that isolated nutrients cannot fully replicate. Learn how nutrients interact with one another, why eating an orange is different from taking a vitamin C supplement, what research says about fish versus fish oil supplements, and why green powders are not the same as fruits and vegetables.

The episode also discusses the role of supplements, when they may be appropriate, and why overall dietary patterns remain the strongest predictor of long-term health.

What makes a diet one of the “best”?
Every year, new rankings are released naming the best diets. But have you ever wondered what actually qualifies a diet for that title?
The highest-ranked eating patterns are usually not the most restrictive. In fact, they often have very few rules.
In my latest blog, I explore five dietary patterns that consistently receive high marks:
✔ DASH
✔ MIND
✔ Mediterranean
✔ Flexitarian
✔ Plant-forward eating
These approaches tend to share several characteristics. They are nutrient-rich, flexible, adaptable, and realistic for long-term use. They can fit into family meals, travel, restaurant dining, and busy schedules.
I also discuss what each eating pattern involves, who can follow it, and some potential challenges people may encounter.
If you’ve ever been curious about why these diets repeatedly show up on “best diet” lists, this article provides an overview of what they have in common.

Which is more important: calories or food quality?
Many nutrition discussions focus heavily on calorie counts.
While calories do matter, they are only part of the picture.
Foods that contain the same number of calories can differ significantly in their nutrient profiles, fiber, protein, and overall contribution to health.
That’s why focusing only on calories may miss some important pieces of the nutrition puzzle.
In the latest Real World Nutrition podcast episode, I explore what calories are, how they work, and why the foods that provide them matter, too.

For years, I didn’t think much about mushrooms from a nutrition perspective.
Sure, I used them on pizza and occasionally in recipes, but they weren’t a food I paid much attention to.
That changed when I started looking more closely at their nutrient profile.
Mushrooms are among the few foods that naturally contain vitamin D. They also provide selenium, potassium, several B vitamins, and fiber while remaining low in calories and naturally low in sodium.
Then there’s the sustainability side. Mushrooms require relatively little land and water compared to many foods, making them an interesting option for people who want to include more environmentally friendly foods in their eating patterns.
And perhaps my favorite thing about mushrooms is how versatile they are. They work in everything from pasta dishes and chili to burgers, tacos, and grilled meals.
In my latest blog, I answer a question many people have asked: Are mushrooms vegetables?

What Makes a Diet Worth Following?
There is no single eating pattern that works for everyone.
Different people have different health conditions, schedules, food preferences, cultures, and goals. However, when researchers examine eating patterns that consistently support health, they tend to find common characteristics.
Healthy diets are generally:
✔ Adequate
✔ Balanced
✔ Varied
✔ Moderate
✔ Sustainable
✔ Enjoyable
✔ A good cultural fit
These traits matter far more than whether a diet is trendy or popular.
In my latest blog, I explain each of these characteristics and why healthy eating is about overall patterns rather than strict food rules.

Are all calories equal?
The answer is both yes and no.
From an energy perspective, a calorie is a calorie. Whether calories come from vegetables, grains, desserts, or snack foods, they all provide energy to the body. But calories bring more than energy. They also come packaged with nutrients, fiber, protein, fat, water, and other components that influence health, satisfaction, and overall eating patterns.
In this episode, Shelley explores the concept of calories in, calories out, how calories are calculated, and why two days that contain the same number of calories can look very different nutritionally. Learn about nutrient density, food volume, fiber, satiety, and why food quality matters alongside calorie intake.
This episode provides practical insight into how to think about calories without losing sight of the bigger picture of nutrition.

When you hear the word “diet,” what’s the first thing that comes to mind?
For many people, the answer is weight loss.
But a diet is simply your pattern of eating. Everyone has one.
Whether you cook most meals at home, grab lunch between meetings, enjoy family dinners, follow cultural food traditions, or eat a plant-based lifestyle, those choices are all part of your diet.
This common misunderstanding is one reason nutrition conversations can become confusing.
My latest blog kicks off a new series exploring diets, eating patterns, and what really matters in nutrition.

I’d love to hear your answer: What does the word “diet” mean to you?
