Seriously low effort, so it’s truly a favorite. At least among the over-6 year old crowd, this is a family favorite (sorry not sorry to my first-grader).

Have you ever chopped up a whole butternut squash and still had all ten fingers after? If so, well done. But for the rest of us unfamiliar with a machete, this pre chopped mix is full of fiber and flavor. And the mirepoix is a beautiful French name for the celery/onion/carrot base of so many soups and sautés. When I look up crock pot recipes online I need true dump and go. Not brown the meat and cut veggies for an afternoon “go.” That’s hurry up and wait. Pass.

So this is our family “chicken n’ dumps.” Chicken and dumpling soup, enriched (that ramen broth is 💯 if you want to be extra, though!), fiber-ful, veggie-ful, flavorful, and easy AF. Sometimes I love cooking. And sometimes I’m literally running from one responsibility to the next and as much as I want to slow down, if I do I might fall asleep. Standing. Sis this is easy-peasy comfort food that’s almost like a nap. Except it helps you p**p.

So here it is. Those ingredients above in the photo. 2 cups of the broth. Shred the chicken into small pieces when done. Spice to your liking (aka, I have no idea from one time to the next exactly what spices and how much I use each time, which drives my husband nuts, but is a method I think would make for a really fun choose your own adventure cookbook. Waiting for a publisher to agree with me and sign me up!)

KEY TIP: if you don’t like soggy dumplings (no shade, some of you are out there), bake the biscuits first, then break them up into bite-size pieces and put in the crock pot for the last twenty-ish minutes. They hold their shape, chew, and texture so much better!

For all those times I read to my newborn from my Sean Sudarshan Rajan magazines while I breastfed, so tired my eyes were crossing and I had zero idea what I was even trying to comprehend. For all the times I read my toddler 10 bedtime books, some of them the same over and over, even as I drifted off to sleep sometimes, waking to her little voice telling me “that’s not the story mama, you’re saying funny things!” (I would start mumbling what I was dreaming). For all the nightly bedtimes over the course of kindergarten and first grade I spent ritually reading her Ramona, various Roald Dahl (with some impromptu edits), and Harry Potter. For all the Audible credits I gave up to download one of her favorites. For all the years of library visits and reading and re-reading of these treasures and then the hours of hunting all their hiding places so we could return them and get another dozen. For all the years I spent dreaming of getting back to my own nightly reading…

I am thrilled my now 9 year old found a true love that is also a lifelong skill.

As a pelvic floor occupational therapist, I’ve known these women. I’ve worked with these women, held space and hands for the previously unacknowleged history that continues to live in their bodies, helped witness the impact that carried trauma has on their daily lives. This after deep, extensive training in trauma-informed care.

There is no excuse, as a clinician, as ANYone who touches a body, to not have specific training in trauma-informed care. This should be a given, but sadly is not. A 2024 study published in Violence Against Women found that only 20% of OB/GYN residency programs in the US and Canada include any form of annual TIC training. More than a quarter (27%) provide absolutely zero training. For the programs that do have it, it is usually a single annual lecture. ONE. LECTURE.

Only about 27% of family medicine residencies mention TIC in their curricula. Of those, the vast majority devote LESS THAN 5 hours total per year to it, almost entirely through text-based or didactic lectures on “recognizing signs of trauma,” rather than clinical physical skills.

That resilience my clients and others have needed to live a lifetime in this system has come at a high cost, one that should never be something they continue to pay debt to. The exact same system that fails to train providers in somatic trauma-informed care also protects and even promotes individuals with a history of committing sexual assault.

All our rage belongs here. We are not responsible for “not ruining the futures and reputations” of men who have zero regard for the safety and autonomy of others. Follow this story. Be vocal about it.

I plan to write a book called The Audacity of Youth. Starring my children.

Here there was a rope. There was indeed jumping.

10/10, no notes.
