Donor Tribute: Debra Rodarte

"My mother was always friendly and thoughtful of others. I miss her everyday. Her passing on March 3, 2025, was a little bit of a shock to us as we just lost our father 18 months prior. She wanted to be able to help others and would be thrilled to know her donation helped many lives."

In 1970, Winnie Bender's life was changed forever when she became sick with autoimmune hepatitis, a disease where her own body repeatedly attacked her liver.

Twenty years later, she received the gift of a liver transplant that's given her 36 more years and counting β€” all thanks to the kindness and love of one organ donor and their family.

Every May, the Chanco family reflects on the passing of their beloved son Christian "CJ" Chanco.

CJ loved being around people and having fun. Anyone would tell you he was the life of the party. He had a way of connecting with people and touched the lives of many in the utmost positive way.

In a moment of tragedy, CJ became a true hero, donating six organs that gave five strangers a second chance to experience all life has to offer.

On Memorial Day, we honor the individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Corporal Benjamin S. Kopp, a member of the 75th Army Ranger Regiment, saved six of his comrades when his unit came under attack in Afghanistan. He was mortally wounded and saved four more lives back in the United States through his selfless gift of organ donation. πŸ’™πŸ’š

To honor Corporal Kopp and all other brave soldiers who became organ, eye and tissue donors, the Fallen Soldier statue stands at the National Donor Memorial at United Network for Organ Sharing and honors members of our military who made donation their last courageous act of service.

The site is a place of peace for all who wish to honor the gift of life!

Kay was known for his dedication to service and his unwavering commitment to helping others as a Community Service Officer.

In August 2020, Kay became a donor hero following a medical emergency while on duty. He saved three lives by donating his kidneys and liver to those in need. His cardiovascular tissue, corneas, skin and bone also helped heal and improve the lives of many more. πŸ’™πŸ’š

Kay’s legacy of generosity lives on through his recipients, who carry his legacy forward every day.

New Mexico music lost one of its most recognizable voices, but the legacy of the Hurricane familia will live on forever.

Al Hurricane Jr. carried forward a tradition that his father, Al Hurricane, and the Sanchez family helped build into the very heartbeat of New Mexico. Our querida MΓΊsica de Nuevo MΓ©xico - New Mexico Spanish Music.

Together, their music became part of our culture, our celebrations, our families, and our identity as New Mexicans.

For generations, their songs have played at weddings, fiestas, family cookouts, dances, road trips, and moments that turned into lifelong memories. Their sound is not just music. It is home.

Today, all of us at Sierra Donor Services New Mexico send our deepest condolences to the Sanchez family and to everyone across our state mourning this tremendous loss.

Thank you for the music.
Thank you for the memories.
Thank you for building a legacy that helped define the sound of New Mexico.

That legacy will continue to live on for generations to come.
