On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the rich cultures, histories and contributions of Indigenous peoples while recognizing the ongoing challenges their communities face, including health disparities and inequities in access to lifesaving transplants. 💙💚

More than 1,000 Native Americans are currently waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant — 116 are here in New Mexico. Raising awareness for organ, eye and tissue donation and signing up to be a donor are two important ways we can help make a difference and bring hope to those waiting for a second chance at life.

A special thank you to Mayor Tim Keller and Pueblo of Zia Tribal Leader Dillon Shije for stopping by our booth and supporting our mission!

Organ, eye and tissue donation can seem like a complex process, but it's important to understand the facts when it comes to giving the gift of life.

💚 The donor and their family are treated with the utmost care, respect, and dignity throughout the donation process.

Understanding the reality behind donation reminds us why it’s so important to give everyone waiting for a transplant the chance at a new beginning.

We are celebrating the gift of restored vision on World Sight Day, a gift made possible by selfless eye donors each day!

Grabbing for a toy may look like normal infant behavior, but for Silas, this moment meant that he could finally see. Silas was born in December 2023 with a very rare eye condition that causes the cornea to become opaque rather than clear, and his mother, Ellie, was told he would be blind.

After getting a second opinion, cornea experts at OSHU Casey Eye Institute suggested cornea transplants could help restore sight to both eyes and he had his first procedure in March of 2024.

Because Silas’ condition was so rare, they couldn’t be certain the treatment would work – until Silas reached out for the toy. At almost 2 years old, he has had three corneal transplant surgeries. The older Silas gets, the fewer transplants he’ll need.

Ellie is hopeful the next one will be able to last up to five years, and Silas’ care team is hopeful he’ll go on to have a relatively clear vision with little to no issues!

Charleen Roccucci has clear 20/20 distance vision, but that was not always the case.

In 1997, Charleen was diagnosed with Fuch's endothelial corneal dystrophy, a slowly progressing disorder that causes the cornea to swell, leading to glare, cloudy vision and eye discomfort. Over the next 15 years, her vision deteriorated, preventing her from driving at night and later affecting her ability to see clearly during the day.

By 2013, doctors gave her the solution that would restore her vision and eliminate her disease: a cornea transplant.

Today, Charleen never lets her adventurous spirit falter. Whether she's hiking, whale watching, camping or being outdoors, she is always able to see and appreciate the beauty of her surroundings. She also shares her story to educate others about eye donation as a Donate Life Ambassador.

“I am forever grateful for this precious gift of sight and my transformed life because of the two people who signed up to be donors." ~Charleen Roccucci, cornea recipient

In 2014, Claudia Núñez welcomed her daughter Maggie, a healthy baby girl.

At eight months, Maggie developed an illness that brought significant health challenges and changed the course of her life. Claudia was told by doctors that her child wouldn’t live past the age of one. Despite that, Maggie continued to defy the odds and reached the age of ten.

Following Maggie’s death, Claudia made the decision to donate her daughter’s organs. Maggie’s gifts saved the lives of two people: a Sacramento resident who had been waiting 15 years for a kidney transplant and a Pennsylvania resident whose life was saved through a kidney and liver transplant. Through Maggie’s gifts, Claudia's greatest loss became a lasting legacy of hope. 💙💚

“Maggie taught my family what compassion is, and she also taught us that we must always keep fighting and never give up. That is why, on the day we had to decide her fate, the choice to donate her organs was not difficult. Maggie gave two people a second chance at life. Her passing will always hurt but knowing that she continues living on in other lives brings me a deep sense of peace.” ~Claudia Núñez, donor mother

approximately half of all infants born with Down syndrome have a heart defect that often need heart valve transplants to survive?

Stephen Kellett was among those infants whose lives were saved through the selfless gift of tissue donation. 💙💚

Now, 32 years later, Stephen continues to enjoy his favorite things — cooking, gardening, dressing up for Halloween, watching the newest superhero movies, shopping, spending time with friends and sharing his experience as a Donate Life Ambassador.

“Our family is eternally grateful to the family of his valve donor. Their generosity gave Stephen a chance at life, and we're forever and ever indebted to them.” ~Diana Ferreira, Stephen’s sister

Scott Wallace, Associate Athletic Director/Media Relations at Fisk University, is no stranger to the life-changing power of tissue donation.

Living with a rare eye disease called keratoconus, Scott's vision gradually deteriorated. A cornea transplant would become the only way to save his ability to see.

But in 1997, an eye donor selflessly gave him that gift, and Scott underwent a double cornea replacement surgery. Today, he is seeing things clearer than ever before — all thanks to the generosity of his donor hero. 💙💚

"Because of my donor’s graciousness, I have been given the precious gift of sight—a gift that continues to bless my life every day." ~Scott Wallace, Cornea Recipient
