AphasiaAccess

AphasiaAccess We help speech-language pathologists deliver reimbursable, person-centered aphasia treatment.

People with aphasia struggle to navigate healthcare services and everyday life. AphasiaAccess grew out of the unmet needs of people living with aphasia as well as frustration with dwindling funding, constraints on services, and a desire for more meaningful outcomes for people with aphasia. Aphasia researchers, innovators, and program founders realized that the outcomes they have measured, and the

services they have provided, have profoundly improved how people with aphasia access life’s interactions and activities. The publication of the Life Participation Approaches to Aphasia (LPAA) position paper formalized a new paradigm. Aphasia centers and innovative clinical programs around North America embrace LPAA values. AphasiaAccess represents a unique and innovative alliance of program leaders, healthcare providers, educators, and researchers who set as their priority an exchange of programming knowledge, research collaboration, and best practices in governance, fundraising, and promotion.

✨ As part of National Speech, Language, and Hearing Month, we're highlighting a day in the life as an SLP working in research!

"My role is to support neuroscientists within a language research lab. I collaborate with a team exploring areas such as brain stimulation. I provide insight as a SLP to help with the design and implementation of aphasia studies using treatments like phonomotor. I also spend time administering language assessments, and keeping up on the latest aphasia research. I hope you liked learning about a SLP working in research!" Shelley Laitinen, MS, CCC-SLP, Medical College of Wisconsin, Aphasia Access Member 💚

🚨 April is Stress Awareness Month and people with aphasia and their care partners have some unique challenges that can exacerbate stress.

• Communication barriers
• Social isolation
• Time pressure
• Financial strain
• Navigating healthcare systems

🤝 Building a strong peer network through participating in aphasia groups and caregiver support groups can help reduce isolation and ease anxiety. SLPs have a unique role and Aphasia Access has the resources and education to help us learn about all the ways we can support our clients navigating the journey.

For resources, a community of likeminded SLPs, CEUs, and more, check out AphasiaAccess.org.
