Millennial parenting comes with its own language — and if you're an active grandparent, it helps to know the drill.

"Big feelings." "Gentle parenting." "Co-regulation." "Time-in." These aren't just buzzwords — they're how modern parents are raising the next generation, and understanding the lingo is one of the easiest ways to stay connected and support your own kids as they navigate parenthood.

This is your field guide: what each phrase actually means, and how to translate it into what you already know how to do.

Because navigating modern family dynamics isn't about changing who you are — it's about updating your playbook to partner with parents.

Visit https://activegrandparenting.com/active-grandparenting-book/ to pre-order the complete guide to active aging and modern grandparenting.

Being a step-grandmother is its own relationship — not a lesser version of another one — and it comes with challenges nobody warns you about.

Researchers call it "role ambiguity": there's no script for how close you're "allowed" to be, or what your role should look like. Studies have even documented a real "step-gap" in closeness and contact between step-grandparents and grandchildren compared to biological grandparents. If you've felt that distance, it's not in your head.

Here's the hopeful part: research also shows that gap isn't permanent. Your bond with your grandchild's parents, how early you enter their life, and how consistently you show up all shape how close that relationship becomes — and studies show step-grandparents who stay emotionally invested and connected can build closeness that looks no different from a biological grandparent's.

You're not an outsider. You're building something new, one ordinary moment at a time.

Because you, too, are grandparenting — visit https://activegrandparenting.com/active-grandparenting-framework/ to get my free Active Grandparenting Framework to help you navigate modern family dynamics with confidence. And let me know in the comments if this resonates.

Grandparents do you know the difference between gentle parenting and permissive parenting? They get lumped together constantly — but they are not the same thing.

The difference comes down to boundaries. Gentle parenting combines warmth with consistent limits. Permissive parenting offers warmth without follow-through. One teaches kids to understand rules and regulate their emotions. The other is linked to more school misconduct and lower frustration tolerance.

Knowing the difference changes how you support your children's parenting choices — and how you show up for your grandchildren.

Understanding modern parenting styles is one more way to stay connected across generations, and it's exactly the kind of practical guidance I cover in my new book, Active Grandparenting. It's filled with actionable steps to help modern grandparents navigate family dynamics, functional fitness exercises to help you stay actively involved with your children and grandchildren, my best health and wellness knowledge from two decades as a women's wellness coach to help you add more active years to your life, and my favorite family recipes for nourishing, delicious meals. Because grandparents deserve resources to help them enjoy these years and have more fun.

Did you know the difference between gentle and permissive parenting? I didn’t!

Grandparents, if gentle parenting makes you wince, you're not alone — and you're not wrong to notice the shift and even be annoyed by it.

Boomers and Gen X grandparents were raised on a different parenting model: clear rules, respect for authority, one-way communication. Gentle parenting asks kids to question and express, which can look like disrespect through that lens. But here's the nuance: the real friction isn't gentle parenting itself — it's when gentle parenting quietly becomes permissive parenting, without the boundaries that make it work.

Modern family dynamics don't have to be a source of tension. They can be an invitation to understand your children's parenting choices, ask more questions, and stay close to your grandchildren instead of drifting apart over a philosophy.

That's exactly why I wrote Active Grandparenting — my new book packed with actionable steps to help modern grandparents navigate family dynamics with confidence. It includes functional fitness exercises to keep you actively involved with your children and grandchildren, decades of health and wellness coaching information to help you add more active years to your life, and my favorite family recipes for nourishing, delicious meals. Because grandparents deserve resources to help them enjoy these years too. How do you feel about gentle parenting?

Every grandmother needs a mantra before opening her mouth in front of parents: W.A.I.T. — Why Am I Talking? Is a superpower for all sorts of everyday situations.

It's the foundational practice of Grandparents Anonymous, a very real, very necessary support group for grandparents recovering from their own good intentions. (You know who you are. The car seat comments. The gentle parenting frustration. The walking on eggshells around parents grandparents.)

Fair warning: W.A.I.T. isn't just for grandparenting. It works shockingly well on husbands, in-laws, and that one coworker who narrates every meeting. Consider this a public service.

Active Grandparenting isn't about having all the answers — sometimes it's just about not saying them out loud.

Ready for more tools for navigating modern grandparenting and family dynamics? Visit https://activegrandparenting.com/active-grandparenting-book/ to pre-order my new book, Active Grandparenting and get up to speed on active aging and modern grandparenting. Plus, it’s got all my best family recipes.

08/27/2026

This generation of grandparents is more stretched than any before it — and that's exactly why intentional grandparenting matters now more than ever.

Nearly a quarter of American adults are part of the sandwich generation, caring for aging parents while still raising or supporting their own kids. Add in the fact that many grandparents are still working, and that delayed childbearing means today's grandparents are becoming grandparents later — often around 50 for a first-time grandmother — and the math gets tight fast.

But here's what the research also shows: grandparents are showing up anyway. Nearly 70% provide regular care. On average, that's over 500 hours a year — real time, real presence, real impact.

Active Grandparenting isn't about having more hours in the day. It's about protecting the ones you have and using them on purpose.

The years to be an active, present, healthy grandparent are not unlimited — which is exactly why being proactive about your health, your time, and your relationships now is how you create more of them later.

If you're stretched thin and don't have time to figure it all out because you're too busy being all things to all people, visit https://activegrandparenting.com/active-grandparenting-book/ to pre-order your copy of Active Grandparenting — the essential handbook for active agers and modern grandparents. I’ve got you covered!
