We talk about aggression often being a sign a child has a full "emotional backpack".

This doesn't mean you or your child have done anything wrong. What can fill up one person's emotional backpack, can be very different from someone else's.

The good news is that it's not necessary to know what caused the upset, the important thing is that we can welcome the outpouring knowing that it will lead to a lighter, more connected young person.

Aggression and aggressive behaviors can send our children and us into shame, guilt, feeling "wrong", feeling judged, etc. None of these feelings help us to find and/or seek connection, when that is what we truly need.

Good support is the key to healing the gunky feelings at the bottom of the backpack.

👉Not only do we "affirm" these feelings, we lean into them. Our tool of "Staylistening" refers to how we meet big feelings by coming in close, with warmth and eye contact (if that's suitable for your child) and listen attentively as they let out their hurt.

👉We don't interrupt, fix or rationalize. We know that offloading in our empathetic presence is what is needed to get healing. This is such important and powerful work and the impact it has had on adults who were once raised this way is phenomenal.
