Home of Angels

Home of Angels Home of Angels (HoA) is a non-profit organization founded by parents with developmental disabilities children.

Its mission is to provide an inclusive setting where these special needs people can call home. It would be self-contained with amenities necessary to provide quality life to this under served population. The term developmental disability refers to a severe and chronic disability that is attributable to a mental or physical impairment that begins before individual reaches adulthood. These disabilit

ies include intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism, and disabling conditions closely related to intellectual disability or requiring similar treatment. One of the activities in HoA’s plan is to provide meaningful programs to these special needs children so that they can benefit from regular social interactions and supervised physical exercise. Many of the children with developmental disabilities have poor health at very early age because their level of physical inactivity is less than one tenth of normally developed children at similar age. As a result, they have high body fat, cholesterol and in many cases high blood pressure. Besides the rapid health deterioration at early age, these kids have inadequate social skills to develop relationship with their peers. They typically do not know how to initiate and maintain a dialogue with their peers. They don’t know the basic social etiquette that they need to follow in their daily social encounters. While their verbal behaviors are below that of their peers, their biggest challenge is that they are not familiar with the social rules and they don’t have many opportunities to acquire this critical independent living skill. HoA’s day program will attempt to address both skills deficits. Our day program will provide supervised physical exercises and productive play groups. Currently there are not many programs that support these children. HoA wants to provide alternative solutions that would give them needed help.

As with neurotypical children, children on the spectrum want to feel like they are being heard and given the attention needed when they aren't "feeling it" in their natural setting for learning. When this occurs its important to use calming phrases and say them in a tone that imparts empathy and understanding for that person to feel their frustrations aren't being dismissed. Their emotions are a big make up of who they are so dismissing them would be like dismissing the person altogether. Let's give an empathetic shoulder to lean and learn from which our kiddos become well adjusted to our teachings Click on the following link for more alternative wordings and ways in which to incorporate them in your behavioral intervention strategy plan

At Home of Angels, we focus on approaching each learning challenge in a way that suits the learner whether it be visual-spatial discriminative stimuli or multiple exemplars to ensure the child can fully grasp what we are trying to teach. Considering Einstein's theory of insanity, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting a different result", we need to explore many ways by which the child can learn at his or her capacity and happily see the positive results that follows when the child enjoys the positive reinforcement and wishes to learn more

It is important to start fresh each day, session, encounter with your kiddo with the expectation that this day, session, encounter will offer a new learning opportunity, a new way of thinking, a new way of loving your role in shaping your child's life in the most beneficial way for both yourself and the child. Embracing the challenge and perceiving the challenge as a benefit and opportunity for positive development is what is known as growth mindset. From this starting point, everything will begin to bloom in your interactions with the child transforming resentment into appreciation and hardship into wonderful resilience that will take your relationship with your kiddo to a whole new level
