Studies show that modern Americans sit for 13 to 15 hours per day, as opposed to 200 years ago where the average person sat for 3 to 5 hours a day. This is a significant increase, emphasizing the importance of movement. We are meant to move!
Excess sitting is linked with many diseases and conditions, including but not limited to: obesity, hypertension, back pain, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and depression. Movement is shown to decrease the chances of developing these conditions, while also adding many other benefits such as:
⚪️ Healthier joints
⚪️ Stronger bones
⚪️ Increased physical strength
⚪️ Improved circulation
⚪️ Improved coordination
⚪️ Improved concentration and focus
⚪️ Increased mental wellbeing
⚪️ Improved sleep
⚪️ Improved bowel function
All of these benefits are critical for maintaining a healthy lifestyle!
However, with today’s society it is harder to get up and move around more often as most jobs require computer/desk work. Though you can’t help these situations, here are some ways to increase your movement as much as possible:
⚪️ Make it a point to get up and move around every hour if you have a desk job
⚪️ Consider using a standing desk
⚪️ Take a walk over lunch
⚪️ Park far from a store entrance
⚪️ Walk on a treadmill while watching TV
⚪️ Do some stretches before you go to bed and when you wake up
Even a small increase in exercise can offer many benefits. There are many other ways to increase your movement as well, get creative! Once you get moving, you will notice an increase in energy, and be motivated to continue moving!
