Texas heat can be tough on little ones. Kids don’t always recognize when they’re getting too much sun or not drinking enough water, so it’s important to keep an eye on them during outdoor play.
Too much sun exposure can lead to dehydration, fever, and skin damage. Here are a few ways to
help keep your child safe :

🚰Keep kids well-hydrated with water throughout the day
☀️Avoid peak sun hours between 10 AM and 4 PM when possible
🩳Dress children in cool, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat
🕶️Use child-sized sunglasses with at least 99% UV protection
⛱️Take regular breaks in the shade or indoors to cool down
🧴If your child develops a sunburn with fever, blistering, or pain, give us a call at 972-649-5480.

☀️ Vitamin D plays an important role in your child's health- but many parents are surprised to learn that children may not get enough from sunlight or diet alone.

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus, which are essential for building strong bones and teeth. It also supports muscle function and a healthy immune system.

So, does your child need a vitamin D supplement?

The answer depends on their age, diet, and overall health.

👶 Breastfed infants should receive 400 IU of vitamin D daily, beginning within the first few days after birth. Breast milk is the ideal source of nutrition, but it does not provide enough vitamin D on its own.

🍼 Formula-fed infants who drink less than about 32 ounces of vitamin D-fortified formula per day may also need supplementation.

🥛 Older children who don't regularly consume vitamin D-rich foods (such as fortified milk, yogurt, fatty fish, or fortified cereals) or who have limited sun exposure may not be getting enough vitamin D through diet alone.

While spending time outdoors can help the body produce vitamin D, sunscreen (which is important for preventing sunburn and skin damage) reduces this production. Because of this, healthcare providers do not recommend relying on sun exposure as a child's primary source of vitamin D.

If you're unsure whether your child is getting enough vitamin D, talk with your pediatrician before starting a supplement. Too much vitamin D can also be harmful, so it's always best to discuss the appropriate dose for your child's age and needs.

Growing healthy bones starts with good nutrition- and we're here to help every step of the way.

Sneezing. Runny noses. Itchy eyes. Sound familiar?

While many people associate allergies with spring, summer can bring its own allergy triggers- including grass pollen, weeds, mold spores, and increased outdoor activity.

Common symptoms include:

🤧 Frequent sneezing

👃 Clear runny or stuffy nose

👁️ Itchy, watery, or red eyes

😴 Trouble sleeping due to congestion

😮‍💨 Coughing or worsening asthma symptoms

Here are a few ways to help reduce allergy symptoms:

🌿 Check local pollen levels before spending long periods outdoors.

🚿 Have your child shower and change clothes after playing outside to remove pollen from their skin and hair.

🏠 Keep windows closed during high-pollen days and use air conditioning when possible.

🧺 Wash bedding regularly to remove pollen and other allergens.

💊 If your child has persistent allergy symptoms, talk with your pediatrician about whether allergy medications may be appropriate.

If symptoms interfere with sleep, school, sports, or daily activities, don't assume your child just has "a lingering cold." Allergies are common and can often be managed effectively with the right treatment plan.

Our team is here to help your child breathe easier all summer long.

After a day at the pool or lake, it's not uncommon for children to complain of ear pain. While many parents assume it's an ear infection, it may actually be swimmer's ear, an infection of the outer ear canal caused by moisture becoming trapped after swimming.

Common signs of swimmer's ear include:

👂 Ear pain that worsens when the outer ear is touched or pulled

💧 Itching inside the ear canal

🎧 Redness or swelling around the ear opening

🔊 Temporary muffled hearing

💦 Drainage from the ear

To help prevent swimmer's ear:

🏖️ Gently dry your child's ears with a towel after swimming.

🧺 Tilt the head from side to side to help water drain naturally.

🚫 Avoid inserting cotton swabs or other objects into the ear canal. They can damage the skin and increase the risk of infection.

🏊 Children who swim frequently may benefit from preventive drying ear drops- but check with your pediatrician first, especially if your child has ear tubes or a history of eardrum problems.

If your child develops significant ear pain, fever, drainage, or symptoms that don't improve, schedule an appointment. Prompt treatment can help relieve discomfort and prevent the infection from worsening.

Summer means more time outdoors- but it also means more opportunities to brush against poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac.

These plants contain an oily resin called urushiol, which can trigger an itchy, uncomfortable rash after skin contact. The rash itself is not contagious, but the oil can remain on clothing, shoes, backpacks, sports equipment, and even pet fur if not washed away.

If your child comes into contact with one of these plants:

🧼 Wash the exposed skin with soap and cool water as soon as possible. Removing the oil early may reduce the severity of the rash.

👕 Wash any clothing, shoes, or gear that may have touched the plant.

🚫 Encourage your child to avoid scratching. Scratching can damage the skin and increase the risk of infection.

🧴 Cool compresses, oatmeal baths, and calamine lotion may help relieve itching. In some cases, your pediatrician may recommend other treatments depending on the severity of the rash.

Seek medical care if the rash:
• Covers a large area of the body
• Involves the face, eyes, or ge****ls
• Shows signs of infection, such as increasing redness, warmth, swelling, or pus
• Is accompanied by difficulty breathing or significant facial swelling

Learning to recognize these plants and wearing long sleeves or pants while hiking can help reduce the risk of exposure.
