Su***de prevention starts with connection. By increasing awareness, reducing the stigma surrounding mental health, and creating space for honest conversations, we can make a difference—and potentially save a life.

Proposed legislation HB 6022 does not address real problems, it is a solution in search of a problem.

The reason why individuals sit in Michigan emergency rooms for hours or days is NOT because of untimely pre-admission screenings. Under the current system, Community Mental Health (CMH) entities successfully complete 98.5% of screenings within the required three-hour window.

The real problem is the critical lack of available inpatient beds across the state. If a screening is completed perfectly on time but there is no place for the patient to go, there is very little anyone can do. HB 6022 ignores this infrastructure shortage and disrupts a screening process that already works. Oppose HB 6022.

Michigan's proposed HB 6022 threatens to burden our healthcare system with administrative hurdles that pull clinicians away from patient care. By involving multiple private Medicaid insurance companies in pre-admission screenings, the bill introduces varying standards for care approval. Instead of a streamlined process, non-CMH clinicians will need to fill out complicated assessment tools and adhere to lengthy intake procedures.

Time spent navigating bureaucratic procedures and insurance-specific standards is time taken away from patients in crisis. Protect clinicians and patients—oppose HB 6022.

🌟 The Compass Room at MyMichigan Medical Center–Alma is now live!

This new resource was made possible through a collaboration between Gratiot Integrated Health Network and MyMichigan Medical Center–Alma.

The Compass Room provides adults and youth who need behavioral health intervention—but do not have immediate medical care needs—with a safe, supportive place to receive an in-person behavioral health assessment without being formally admitted to the Emergency Department.

“The goal is simple: get people the right care, at the right time, in the most efficient manner possible,” said GIHN CEO Michelle Stillwagon.

The Compass Room is another important step toward strengthening Gratiot County’s response to behavioral health crises.

“By providing earlier access to behavioral health professionals, the program will help reduce unnecessary Emergency Department admissions, decrease wait times, and connect people more quickly to the services that best meet their needs,” Stillwagon said.

Michigan's proposed HB 6022 creates a poor patient experience for individuals seeking care while simultaneously increasing healthcare costs.

By taking a pre-admission screening process that currently works 98.5% of the time and dividing responsibilities among multiple entities, the bill creates more handoffs and confusion over who is responsible for patients. As a result, vulnerable people will wait longer for care.

Proposed legislation HB 6022 would change Michigan's mental health triage by splitting the pre-admission screening function between public Community Mental Health Associations (CMHs) and private Medicaid Health Plans.

Under this bill, when a person arrives in an emergency room, the hospital must first determine if the crisis is mild/moderate or severe:
*If severe, the CMH performs the screening as currently required.
*If mild/moderate, the hospital must then identify the patient's specific
insurance provider and contact that Medicaid health plan to come do the
screening.

In some areas of Michigan, there are as many as EIGHT different health plans in a single region. Splitting a unified system into multiple pathways creates unnecessary confusion at the critical point of entry. Oppose HB 6022.
