Each year, August 31st marks International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD), the world's largest annual campaign to end overdose. This year's theme is "25 Years On. Still Needed". The theme reminds us that overdose affects people from every walk of life and that overdose prevention remains an urgent need.

Livestock fairs and shows are an important learning opportunity for people of all ages interested in agriculture. Animals commonly exhibited at agricultural fairs and shows, including pigs, poultry (e.g., chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese), and cattle, can carry and spread influenza A viruses that are different from human seasonal influenza A viruses. Pigs can be infected with swine influenza A viruses, and poultry can be infected with avian influenza A viruses.

Keep these hygiene tips in mind when having fun at the fairs this season!

A suspected Harmful Algal Bloom has been reported to EGLE. This bloom was visible on Black Lake at the Onaway State Park boat ramp in Presque Isle County.

HABs usually occur in Michigan May through October, most commonly in August and September.
HABs form due to a rapid overgrowth or bloom of cyanobacteria, also known as bluegreen algae. Cyanobacteria are naturally present in lakes, rivers and ponds. Unfortunately, some cyanobacteria produce toxins, called cyanotoxins, that can be present in algae blooms, which at higher levels can be harmful to people and animals.
