☀️ Can you tan while breastfeeding?

As summer arrives, many nursing moms wonder whether self-tanners, spray tans, tanning beds, or sun exposure could affect their breast milk or baby.

The good news: most tanning methods are unlikely to affect breast milk directly. However, there are important differences between self-tanning lotions, spray tans, and UV tanning that every breastfeeding parent should know.

In our latest article, we break down:
✔️ Self-tanners and breastfeeding
✔️ Spray tan safety and inhalation concerns
✔️ Tanning beds and UV exposure
✔️ Whether tanning products can enter breast milk
✔️ Practical tips for staying safe while nursing

This Memorial Day weekend, we pause to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. We are deeply grateful for their sacrifice and for the families who carry that legacy every day. 🇺🇸

As many families gather this weekend, we also wanted to share a resource we commonly get questions about: alcohol and breastfeeding.

Our “Time to Zero” alcohol calculator helps estimate how long alcohol remains in breast milk based on your individual situation and can help support informed feeding decisions.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day weekend from all of us at InfantRisk.

Last month our Director, Dr. Kaytlin Krutsch visited the FDA’s White Oak campus, where she presented to an interdisciplinary team of FDA scientists and collaborators on the real-world challenges families and healthcare providers face when lactation data is limited.

The visit also included discussions around emerging research approaches that may one day help us better predict how medications transfer into human milk and how the lactating mammary gland changes over time, all with the goal of improving the information available to breastfeeding families and their healthcare teams.

One of the highlights of the trip was reconnecting with former TTUHSC School of Pharmacy student Kori Adair, who completed a fellowship at the FDA and now works there as an FDA drug information pharmacist.

We’re grateful for opportunities to collaborate, share ideas, and continue moving lactation science forward.

New Publication Alert 📣

Our latest publication on cariprazine (Vraylar) during lactation provides the first empirical human milk data for this medication.

Estimated infant exposure to cariprazine and its active metabolites fell below standard safety thresholds. However, reported infant adverse effects and the potential for metabolite accumulation due to DDCAR’s long half-life highlight the need for caution and further research, particularly at higher maternal doses.

These findings underscore the importance of continued pharmacokinetic and clinical research to better inform breastfeeding guidance for families and providers.

New Publication Alert from the InfantRisk Center

Human milk can naturally vary in color but sudden changes can be surprising and sometimes concerning for breastfeeding families.

Our newly published study in the Journal of Human Lactation, “Colorful Concerns: Exploring Perceived Reasons for and Maternal–Infant Reactions to Human Milk Color Changes Through a Cross-Sectional Study,” explores how mothers experience, interpret, and respond to changes in milk color.

The findings highlight the need for better anticipatory guidance so families know that milk color variation can occur and unnecessary fear does not disrupt breastfeeding.

Did you know breast milk can be more than just white?

From yellow to green to even pink—milk color can change based on diet, stage of lactation, or even a small amount of blood.

In this video, we show how just a little blood can change the color of milk—and why that can be normal in some cases.
