GLP-1 agonists have been a remarkable treatment for those who suffer from obesity-related illness, but suppressing hunger cues could pose a risk for those with eating disorders.

Body image doesn’t start in adulthood.
It starts when we are little. Very little.

Between about ages 3–8, we are forming our first understanding of our bodies.
Not from science.
Not from health class.
But from tone of voice.
From comments.
From what we see modeled.
From how caregivers talk about their bodies.
From how people react to ours.

A raised eyebrow.
A “you’re so tiny.”
A “you’d be so pretty if…”
A parent pinching their own stomach in the mirror.

All of it gets stored.

Our nervous system creates what I think of as an embodied story — a felt sense of what our body means in the world. Whether it’s safe. Whether it’s acceptable. Whether it’s “too much” or “not enough.”

And that story runs quietly in the background for years.

When someone says, “I just hate my body,” it rarely began last week. It began decades ago.

Body image work isn’t about forcing positivity.
It’s about gently exploring:

• Where did these beliefs begin?
• Whose voice is this?
• What did little-me learn about my body?
• Does that still need to run the show?

This kind of exploration takes time. It takes compassion. It takes safety.

But when we understand where our body story came from, something shifts.
We can begin to manage it instead of being managed by it.

And that’s where peace starts.
Not perfection.
Not control.
But a quieter, steadier relationship with the body you live in.

That work is worth doing. 💛

This year I went back to Mexico City, my hometown, and rediscovered it all over again. I wandered through markets, ate at fondas I’d forgotten about, and came home to my kitchen to keep experimenting. The result? Three recipes I can’t stop making — a taco that deserves a spot in your weekly rotation, a side dish with a twist I’m a little obsessed with, and a dessert with a spin you won’t see coming. I’m sending all three to everyone who joins my monthly newsletter. Come cook with me! Sign Up here https://patijinich.com/newsletter-signup/

The same things GLP-1 medications are praised for — better blood sugar, lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, less fatty liver, better sleep apnea, lower heart attack and stroke risk — have also been demonstrated in large randomized trials using food, movement, stress management, and social support.

Medications can be powerful tools. But your daily choices are a powerful tool too — and they’re the one tool you keep using long after the prescription ends.

Diet and lifestyle interventions are transformational because you learn to ‘know thyself’ — developing a deeper understanding and appreciation for your personal biophysiology: how your body, metabolism, digestion, and chemistry respond and thrive. And you use that information to make body informed decisions for you and foods for the rest of your life.

DID YOU KNOW:
Some Indigenous tribes used the raw root of Jack-in-the-Pulpit as a natural deterrent or punishment because it contains extremely high levels of calcium oxalate “needle crystals.”

These crystals can make up 10–25% of the dried root.
That’s not the same oxalate in spinach or rhubarb — these are raphides, tiny needles that cause instant burning and swelling.

Traditional cultures understood this toxicity deeply. They knew the plant had to be dried, roasted, or processed for a long time before it was safe to eat or apply as medicine.

Fast-forward to today — we still consume oxalates in foods like spinach, beets, almonds, potatoes, cacao, and sweet potatoes.
While these foods don’t contain raphide crystals, many people with gut issues, SIBO, mold toxicity, and impaired oxalate metabolism can develop symptoms from chronic oxalate load:
• joint pain
• bladder irritation
• kidney stones
• vulvodynia
• rashes
• brain fog

Oxalate sensitivity is real, scientifically documented, and worth paying attention to — especially if you’ve already cleaned up your diet and still have symptoms. 🌿✨
