Big moment for Jacob today!

Jacob took his first steps in his left below-knee test socket during his very first fitting.

The test socket stage gives our prosthetists the opportunity to evaluate fit, comfort, alignment, and make adjustments before moving forward with the final prosthesis. Those first few steps give us a lot of valuable information, and Jacob did a great job.

One step closer to getting back to doing the things he wants to do.

Last Wednesday we had the opportunity to demo the BionicM powered knee, and one of the best ways to really understand the difference is something as simple as going from sitting to standing.

That’s usually the moment it clicks.

With a traditional microprocessor knee, the technology helps control and respond to movement. With a powered knee like the BionicM, you can actually feel the assistance helping you stand up.

It’s one thing to explain the difference between a powered knee and a microprocessor knee. It’s another thing to feel it for yourself.

Technology in prosthetics keeps moving forward, and it’s exciting to see what these options can mean for amputees.

Does gaining or losing weight actually change the fit of your prosthetic socket?

Absolutely, and sometimes even a relatively small change can make a noticeable difference.

In this video, I ask prosthetist Paul Leimkuehler, CPO, how weight gain or weight loss can affect socket fit, comfort, suspension, and overall function.

Your socket is made to fit your limb very specifically, so changes in your body can change how that connection feels.

If your socket suddenly feels too tight, too loose, or just different than it used to, it may be time to have your fit checked.

How do you know if you may qualify for a microprocessor knee?

In this video, Paul Leimkuehler, CPO, explains some of the factors that go into determining whether a microprocessor knee may be appropriate for an amputee.

It is not simply about wanting the newest technology. Your activity level, safety, mobility goals, medical history, and insurance requirements can all play a role.

The right prosthetic knee should match the person using it.

If you have questions about whether a microprocessor knee could be an option for you, talk with your prosthetist and ask what makes the most sense for your needs.
